No more envious looks at our friends across the pond with their fancy Droid’s; the Motorola Milestone has now launched in the UK and is in stock now at Mobiles.co.uk! Europe’s first Android 2.0 (or Eclair if you’re keeping up with the pastry themed code names) phone, the Milsetone is one of the most eagerly anticipated Android phones since the T-Mobile G1 first saw the light of day. Does it live up to our expectations?

Well, from a design point of view the Milestone is easily the best looking Android phone to date. Sporting a stunning 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen, the Milestone is comprised of quality metals and a matte finish on the back with an industrial design that hints at the phones inner power. When held on its side the Milestone slides open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard making it, at just 13.7mm thick, the slimmest phone to do so. The 3.7 inch touchscreen also supports an on-screen keyboard (both alpha-numeric and QWERTY) so you really are spoilt for choice.

The touchscreen itself is a joy to use, employing capacitive technology to allow for multi-touch and a level of responsiveness that is easily on a par with Apple’s iPhone. What’s more, the added dimensions (3.7 inch versus the iPhone’s 3.5) allow for an awesome web browsing experience. Android 2.0 brings a welcome boost in both the speed and user interface of the operating system. Applications launch effortlessly and navigating menus feels slick and intuitive. This is in part due to the latest iteration of Google’s OS and in part due to the preocessor on board, a 600MHZ ARM Cortex A8 CPU that, combined with 256MB of built in RAM, keeps everything running smoothly.

The Milestone is now slouch in the features department with a 5.0 Megapixel on board, boasting a dual LED flash, autofocus, Geo-tagging and DVD-like video capture. Web browsing and downloads are kept speedy thanks to built in HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity whilst the afore-mentioned Geo-tagging is made possible by the inclusion of a GPS receiver. Throw in navigation software, a memory card slot supporting up to 32GB microSD cards, a multimedia player and a 3.5mm audio jack and it’s easy to see why the Droid was such a success.
