LG GC990 Spied: 12.1 Megapixel camera phone!

We knew it was coming. LG even told it was coming. And yet we’re still amazed at the first confirmed sighting of LG’s 12 Megapixel offering, tentatively called the LG GC990 Louvre (but expect a Sony Ericsson Idou/ Satio style name change before the official release). So just what is it about the GC990 that is has us so excited? In the wake of the Sony Ericsson Satio and Samsung Pixon12, you’d imagine we’d be prepared for the LG GC990. So, exactly what is it that’s so impressive?

Well first things first, a 12 Megapixel camera phone is still more than enough to impress. Sporting a 12.1 Megapixel sensor to be precise, the GC990 is complimented by a Schneider Kreuznach lens and Zero shutter lag meaning the image is captured the instant you press the camera button, hopefully meaning missed shots are a thing of the past. That’s not all the GC990 boasts; the obligatory autofocus makes an appearance and LG have also taken a leaf out of the iPhone 3GS‘ book, adding in touch focus. A Xenon Flash should prove powerful in low light conditions (Xenon has always been the flash of choice over LED’s when it comes to digital cameras). The GC990 also includes improved ISO settings meaning the phone is more sensitive to light thus requiring less exposure to light to produce high quality images. The specs alone could quite easily feature on any top of the range digital camera.

Want more? Well, the GC990 doesn’t just master still photography; it’s gunning for the Samsung i8910 HD’s video capture crown too. That’s right, the LG GC990 can record video in HD shooting 1280 x720 pixels at an impressive 30 frames per second. With TV out, you’re also be able to check out all your recordings with minimal fuss. How the results will compare to the i8910 HD in practice remains to be seen but hopefully we’ll see a marked improvement on sound quality (a major gripe with the Samsung). The combination of high quality still photography and video capture helps the GC990 to stand out amongst the Satio and Pixon12. For the time being, all we have are some shots courtesy of GSM Arena taken at an exhibition in Korea but from what we can see, the phone looks somewhat like a combination of the iPhone and LG Renoir.

The GC990 features LG’s popular new S-Class 3D user interface running on the 3.2 inch touchscreen display. Away from the camera, the GC990 keeps up the premium image featuring HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, built in GPS with A-GPS support, Bluetooth and support for high quality video playback thanks to support for DivX and Xvid file formats.

We must stress that at the moment the GC990 is very much at the development stage but if LG can deliver on their promises, the 12 Megapixel camera war might have just got a new favourite. Click here to register for updates.
