Android 2.2 Froyo coming to HTC Desire today?

Whilst some of you will already be aware of an unofficial upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo for the HTC Desire, the process involves quite a bit of tinkering that will scare of your average user. But, if you’ve still got your eye on that upgrade but don’t want to wade through the murky depths of rooting your phone and installing ROM’s then we’ve got good news; Android 2.2 could be set to drop on the HTC Desire in the coming weeks!

Though HTC have yet to confirm an official date, Regional Director Mark Moons tweeted that Android 2.2 upgrades would start rolling out for Desire’s from today onwards and also hinted at Froyo hitting other HTC devices in the next few weeks. Eric Lin, HTC’s global PR and online community manager was slightly more cautious when talking to Pocket Lint, stating that the update could start as early as today but that there is still a testing process that is ongoing.

In addition to this, HTC have confirmed that they will be launching their Android devices in China, including the Desire and recently released Wildfire, and all will be shipped running Android 2.2. Obviously this doesn’t necessarily mean we can definitely expect the Froyo update on both the Desire and Wildfire but it does prove that HTC have successfully transitioned from 2.1 Éclair to 2.2 Froyo with Sense UI in tact. For all you Desire owners, keep hitting the update button over the next few days and be sure to let us know in the comments section if you’re able to upgrade to Froyo!

  2. Hi, If I buy a desire from mobiles.co.uk with orange, can I be able to use the 2.2 update or should I have to wait for the orange update. I am aware that yours are unlocked, but I am not sure about this. Thanks

  3. @Kam - Yep, HTC have confirmed that Android 2.2 Froyo will be rolled out to unlocked Desire owners over the next couple of days and because our HTC Desire’s are unlocked, you won’t need to wait for the Orange version of Froyo. Click here to check out some of our deals!

  4. Hi,
I bought my desire (on vodafone) from mobiles.co.uk a couple of months ago but despite being unlocked, the Froyo update isn’t happening. I’ve tried to force this by going to Settings/About phone/System software update/Check now but it tells me there no update to take place despite the phone being on Android 2.1. Any ideas why this is happening as I think I should be getting the update?
    Cheers.

  5. @Luke - HTC confirmed that this would start rolling out from last weekend onwards. I would assume that, due to the sheer number of Desires sold, this will be a staggered roll out so when your handset receives it could be dependent on the serial number or version of the firmware that it’s running (or something similar). Keep hitting the update button every few hours and hopefully it should hit your device in the coming days.
