First we had the Sony Ericsson X10, the Android power-house and flag ship model. Then came the X10 Mini, the tiny compact, less expensive Android blower. Both of these phones pushed thier dimensions to the extremes, the X10 with it’s 4.0 inch screen and the X10 Mini with a 2.55 inch unit in comparison; this left nothing in the middle ground, nothing in the way of an average sized handset. That is where the latest Sony Ericsson leak fits in, introducing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8.
Now, the Xperia X8 is a previously unheard of alias, purely because past leaks dubbed the handset the Sony Ericsson Shakira, but the X8 appears to offer the middle ground between it’s two Android bretheren. The styling cues are near on identical to the original X10 and aside from the not so obvious difference in dimensions, we can’t see anything that stands out as being different, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing considering the Xperia range is one of the best looking currently available.
With no word on specs, we have to make the assumption that it’ll run on Android software, hopefully version 2.x given how late it comes compared with it’s predescessors; also, we assume that the same 5.0 megpixel camera will be found on the X8 but of course, this is purely speculation. What is interesting however, is that from the screen shots it appears that Sony Ericsson have chosen to use the X10 Mini style Timescape UI as oppose to that found on the full-size X10.

*UPDATE* - The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 just got official.
Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed. The X8 will launch with Android 1.6, in the same way as it’s bretheren. The 5.0 megapixel camera has been swapped out a 3.2 megapixel unit which is coupled with a HVGA resolution 3.0 inch screen. This isn’t neccessarily bad news though, the X8 should be pretty cheap and will be available in white, blue, pink or silver in Q3 of this year.
