Sony Ericsson G700iAt the recent Mobile World Congress Sony Ericsson announced a range of new handsets, amongst which were the G700i.

The G700i is a new move for Sony, taking what is effectively a smartphone and packaging it to appeal to a wider audience. The Sony Ericsson G700i is a Symbian UIQ phone, and this is not the first time Sony have hidden a smartphone under another disguise, but previous incarnations (the W950i and W960i) were aimed at people who use their handset for music, as those handsets are marketed under the Walkman brand.

A main feature of the G700i is the touchscreen interface. Offering easy intuitive navigation, with the touchscreen simply touch the screen to navigate around the menu. If you prefer, a stylus is included with the handset, which works well especially with the handwriting recognition. The handwriting recognition offers a different way to enter data onto the phone, as opposed to the traditional phone keypad.

The G700i has an integrated 3.2 megapixel camera, offering direct interaction with the in-phone imaging and messaging features. A picture taken is more fun when it is shared, and with the G700i in your pocket sharing has never been easier. With an integrated email client you can email the pictures to any email address around the world, you can send photos straight to your blog, upload to an online photo sharing service, or more locally share them with friends via Bluetooth. As well as capturing high quality images, the Sony G700i is also equipped with video capture capability. Share videos by uploading to sites like YouTube.

The Ericsson G700i is also equipped with many other features. Included is a full web browser, support for RSS feeds and push email capability.

With the web browser on your phone you can view your favourite websites on the move. Keep up to date with the latest news headlines, check out your favourite social networking sites or look up the answers to the pub quiz on Google. Support for RSS feeds allows you to keep updated with the latest news from your favourite websites. Every time a new item is published, the RSS feed will update automatically. The push email allows you to receive email instantly on your phone, as soon as they arrive. A compatible email account is needed.

A neat feature on the G700i is the radio alarm clock. I find most alarm tones on a mobile phone to be very irritating first thing in the morning, and I usually look for something soft and gentle to replace the default codes with. With the G700i you can set the alarm to the radio station of your choice and be woken up to the latest hits every morning. What could be better? This is a great feature from Sony Ericsson.

The Sony Ericsson G700i is expected to market soon. If you want to be notified when the handset is available to buy you can sign up here.
