The N900 is Nokia’s first mainstream Maemo offering having formerly reserved the Linux based OS for its internet tablet devices (which lacked sim card slots). For those unfamiliar with Maemo (and that will probably be quite a few of you), the operating system promises to put a desktop user experience in the palm of your hand. Set up multiple home screens and populate them with numerous apps, shortcuts and live web feeds, run multiple applications and manage them through one easy to access dashboard that gives you an overview of everything that’s running and browse the web just as you would on you laptop thanks to full flash support. Away from the operating system, the phone itself packs a punch thanks to an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor (as found in the iPhone 3GS) and up to 1GB of application memory making for a slick and smooth user experience. Combine this with 32GB of internal memory and a memory card slot supporting up to 16GB memory cards (for a potential 48GB of memory!) and it becomes clear Nokia aren’t holding back with the N900. Throw in a 5.0 Megapixel camera, HSDPA and Wi-Fi and a GPS receiver and you’ve got all the makings of a world beater.
