Motorola announce Q4 financial report

Motorola has recently released it’s financial reports for the last quarter of 2009 and at first glance the figures don’t look particularly healthy, in fact, in 2009 Motorola made a quite an astonishing loss of 51 million dollars which is about 32 million pounds; so not exactly a small loss. Many may be wondering though, how this could be construed as good news. Well, when you consider that at the same point in 2008; Motorola were running at a loss of 4.2 billion (yes, billion) dollars, it makes the 51 million dollars seem pretty insignificant really.

In Q4 alone, Motorola earned 142 million dollars and shipped an impressive 12 million handset in the same period. Of the 12 million handsets, 2 million were smartphones, which we’re pretty sure consists mainly of Android powered devices such as the Droid (or Milestone as we know it on our side of the pond). The 12 million handsets sold generated 1.8 billion dollars and helped Motorola reduce it’s operating loss to 132 million dollars, considerably lower than the 595 million in the previous 12 months.

Motorola’s mobile division saw sales of 7.1 billion dollars through 2009, compared with 12.1 billion in 2008 whilst incurring an operating loss of 1.1 billion dollars compared with 2.2 billion in 2008.

If Motorola’s recent success with the Droid in America is anything to go by, then we can expect to see the negative numbers disappearing through out. And, with Motorola pledging their future to the Android operating system, 2010 should be as exciting for consumers as it is for Motorola’s bank manager.
