iPhone Tom Tom app now available!

Tom Tom has finally reached its destination; the Apple iPhone 3GS! Since it was first announced back in June at Apples Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Tom Tom for iPhone has been the app that everybody has been waiting for. And despite a lack of concrete information concerning pricing and availability which has seen several navigation apps launch for the iPhone 3GS, Tom Tom has remained the number one app that iPhone owners wanted to get their hands on. And with those lucky iPhone owners now getting the chance to own the Tom Tom iPhone App, what do you get for your money?

Tom Tom for the iPhone is currently available in two flavours; £59.99 for the UK and Ireland maps and £79.99 for western Europe. So, straight out of the blocks Tom Tom for iPhone impresses with a cheaper than expected retail price. The price of course doesn’t include the in car holder/ speaker specifically designed for the iPhone that Apple and Tom Tom were keen to show off at WWDC – no information on pricing or availability for this yet. But enough about pricing, what of the actual application itself? Is it time to bin that Tom Tom one and hail the iPhone as the complete all in one device?

Well, Tom Tom for iPhone isn’t short on features. The turn-by-turn navigation software comes fully loaded with IQ routes which picks out the smartest, most efficient route any time of the day. Not only saving you time but also money and fuel. Not bad. You also get full safety camera support and speed warnings with Tom Tom warning you audibly and visually of upcoming safety cameras, the speed limit and your current speed. Classic Tom Tom features that drivers have learnt to love in stand alone Tom Tom devices are now complimented nicely by those specifically designed for the iPhone.

Taking advantage of the iPhones multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display, the application supports pinch zooming on maps, lets you scroll through your journey and even takes advantage of the phones built in accelerometer which rotates the display to landscape when the phone is turned on its display letting you choose how you view your journey. Other nice touches include navigating to a contacts address from your contacts list and choosing a restaurant, calling to make a reservation and then finding your way there, all from the Tom Tom App.

There’s a reason Apple didn’t rush Tom Tom for the iPhone – they wanted to get it just right. Available now through the App store, keep an eye on the blog for more news on availability and pricing of the official iPhone Tom Tom car kit.

Excellent news, it was only a matter of time before they got this partnership up & running. I wonder how TomTom sees this affecting their business model for selling the actual sat nav units, I guess it was always going to move towards mobile apps eventually, so they may as well be at the forefront.

Good question, Tom Tom aren’t new to mobiles having released several versions for Windows Mobile devices but never before has it been so easily accessible or on such a popular phone as the iPhone.

Check out our recent post on the rumoured Tom Tom android app and you’ll see what Tom Tom has to say about the impact of smart phones on stand alone navigation devices.

This is a great app and very helpful, wont replace my stand alone TomTOm but is great for on the fly satnav when i haven’t go it on me. Cheaper than i was expecting too…

Looks good, but a bit too pricy for me, I’ve found that i get better reception with a standalone tomtom than with the iphone app regardless. it has its uses and its nice to carry around in the pocket, but it does need less tomtom repairs…the antenna seems to be more stable
