European call charges capped

March 16, 2007 at 4:26 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

Telecoms ministers from the EU have agreed in principle that calls within the European Union should not cost more than 30p per minute back to your home country when roaming. In some cases this will lead to price cuts of up to 70% on current roaming charges.

It is estimated that network operators currently receive income of €10billion. The proposed capped rates would see this income halved. The new proposed charges could come into force as early as July.

The UK was one of the last countries to agree to the terms, holding out for an exemption from the capped charges for schemes such as Vodafone Passport, which charges a 75p connection fee. However the UK was one of the leading countries lobbying for the agreement to be in place within three months, and not six as originally proposed.

  1. About time this law is enforced, although on saying this, it is just a matter of time before skype and other internet phone companies remove the need for european conversation phone calls.

A local call to teh nearest internet connection.
The call goes through the internet and then another local call at the other end.

And with wifi becoming more widespread and likely to be free just about everywhere in the future, mobile phone companies will need to review what they are doing to keep cusomers loyal
