Android News Round Up: The Jelly Bean, Dr Dre, Sensation XE And Runnymede Edition

Don’t worry, we haven’t completely lost our marbles here at Mobiles, there is a very good reason (three in fact) that we’ve listed such a random combination of words in the title. First up, the moniker for the incarnation of Android following Ice Cream Sandwich has supposedly been leaked and as expected, follows the traditional confectionary based naming convention that we’ve all grown quite acustom to. Say hello to Android Jelly Bean.

According to ‘ThisIsMyNext‘, Google are already planning and working on the successor to Ice Cream Sandwich but quite how it fits in the line up remains to be seen. All we know is, we’re still looking forward to the delicious delights that Ice Cream Sandwich brings to the table with the rumours that it’ll be the first combined OS optimised to work flawlessly on both Tablets and Smartphones and should go along way to address the fragmentation issues that continue to plague Android.

Next up, following the acquisition of Beats Audio by HTC, we have the Official announcement of the first ever handset to benefit from the new found collaboration with the creators of the Beats by Dre range. This is the HTC Sensation XE, which for all intents and purposes is a slightly souped up HTC Sensation; a phone which we praised heavily already. The Sensation XE is said to benefit from a clever piece of software, refreshed UI and of course, the obligatory Dr. Dre endorsed headphones which offers the ‘ultimate mobile audio experience’ according to HTC. On top of this, the Sensation XE’s processor clock speed has been upped to 1.5GHz versus the 1.2GHz in the Sensation (or rather, the HTC Sensation was downclocked originally from 1.5GHz to 1.2GHz) on top of which HTC have incorporated a larger 1730mAh battery, included a 16GB or 32GB SD card and have given the Sensation XE a lick of red paint and a bebo-esque red logo on the back casing.

Finally, we have the strangest item of news in the form of another HTC handset ground from the rumor mill and this one really should be filed with a pinch of salt or rather, some of the details should be. This is said to be the HTC Runnymede, which as far as we can tell is an Android touting HTC Titan that we featured earlier in the month. Specs are said to include a single core 1.5GHz processor, 8MP rear camera with dual LED Flash, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a whopping 4.7inch WVGA screen and the obvious Beats upgrades.

Where things start looking a little odd to us, is with the screen shot that’s shown in the supposed HTC press shots. Look closely at the bottom dock bar, looking specifically at the on-screen buttons in the bottom left and bottom right hand corner. We could be wrong, but we can’t recall ever seeing a Sense version that looked like this. Chances are that someone has just photoshopped a poor choice of screenshot onto the Runnymede but what we really don’t understandis the decision to use a single core 1.5GHz processor on a phone  which would normally be considered a flagship with it’s huge 4.7 inch screen. We’ll keep digging to see what else we can uncover, so keep an eye on the blog for more details.
