First look: Nokia N8 USB on the go!

The Nokia N8 isn’t due out for another month or so but we thought we’d take a look at some of the reasons it will be worth the wait. Today, we’re going to look at a little known feature called USB on the go. The Nokia N8 is no slouch in the memory department with 16GB of internal memory and a potential 32GB expandable taking it up to an impressive 48GB. Despite this, Nokia have also added USB on the go (USB OTG), a feature that transforms the smartphone into a USB host meaning you can plug in a USB storage device and play the content on the Nokia N8.

With up to 48GB of memory on offer, you might be wondering why USB OTG is necessary but it’s when the feature is paired with the N8’s HDMI output that it really comes into its own. HD Movies are hardly what you’d call compact, often spanning GB’s of data so storing them all on your phone can become problematic. However, having them stored on a dedicated USB memory device means that they can be called into action when needed and played in glorious HD using the N8’s HDMI output and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound.

As if this isn’t impressive enough, it’s not just USB Memory Sticks that can be connected to the N8; Nokia have shown off the N8 connecting with various other devices and displaying their media content on screen including the Nokia E72 and N900 smartphones and a Samsung 1Terabyte hard drive and playing a wealth of file formats including DivX HD! Nokia’s tagline “It’s not the technology, it’s what you do with it” couldn’t be more spot on.
