Google Gesture Search comes to Android 1.6 and above!

March 17, 2010 at 12:08 pm by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

You may recall last week the news that Google gesture search had launched for phones running version 2.0 or later of the Google Android operating system. Great news for Motorola Milestone and Google Nexus One owners, not so great for those of you running an Acer Liquid, HTC Tattoo or similar. Well, today we can announce the good news that Google gesture search has now landed in the Android Market and is available for all devices running version 1.6 and above of the Android OS.

The app basically acts as a universal search tool, searching through apps on your phone, contacts, bookmarks and music. Before you lose interest and dismiss this as nothing new, it’s worth pointing out that rather than requiring you to type on an on-screen or physical keyboard, Gesture Search instead relies on, yep you guessed it, gestures! Using a simple handwriting recognition tool, simply write on screen and the app will begin to search through your phone and start pulling up results. You can either draw the first letter of what you’re looking for or carry on writing as the phone narrows down the results.

Gesture search is available now in the Android Market, be sure to check it out on your Android phone today. Not got an Android phone and want to know what all the fuss is about? Then check out our fantastic range of Android mobile phones here.

Irish up your Nokia with St Patrick Day apps!

March 15, 2010 at 10:00 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

Comedy green hat and air horn not sufficient for your St Patrick Day celebrations? Need to extend the Irish love to your mobile phone? Well, help is at hand thanks to the good (and not particularly Irish) folks at Nokia. To coincide with the celebrations being held on the 17th of March, Nokia have released four free Irish themed apps in the Ovi store.

The new apps range from potentially useful to downright ludicrous but it’s all in the name of fun. On offer we have a Leprechaun finder that scans for the mischievous little imps (though doesn’t offer the ability to catch them, ala’ Ghostbusters), Focal Me; a Gaeilge (the Irish Language) translator which boasts English translations, pronunciations and playable audio clips, Slainte - Irish Pub Finder which pretty much does what it says on the tin, locating your nearest Murphy’s, O’Neils, O’Flaherty’s etc. and finally the self explanatory Irish flag which acts as your background so you can show your allegiance.

All four apps are available now for free in the Nokia Ovi Store. Whether you’re Irish or just a little Irish at heart, be sure to check them out and download them before the worlds favourite party kicks off on Wednesday.

Opera Mini 5 available in Beta on Android Market!

March 12, 2010 at 12:01 pm by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

Opera are synonymous with mobile web browsers. The Norwegian outfit are the major player when it comes to third party web browsers, currently powering millions of phones across the globe. The reason? Opera brings with it several enhancements over a standard web browser, the main advantage being speed. The ability to load pages super quick is achieved by compressing web pages by up to 90% for even faster load times whilst this compression occurs on a remote server saving your phone from any unecessary processing.

All very well and good, but what if you’ve got an Android smartphone? Well, don’t fret, Opera Mini 5 is now available in Beta for Android. Available to download from Opera’s site and found in the Android Market app store, Opera Mini 5 comes with all the usual goodies - the aforementioned speed, tabbed browsing, password managers, bookmarks and speed dial. It’s easy to see why Opera is the browser of choice for so many mobile users.

Opera Mini 5 Beta for Android follows hot on the heels of its Windows Mobile variation which was rolled out last week. And, with Opera also beavering away on an Opera browser for the iPhone and nearly ready to be submitted to Apple for approval (though it’s anyone’s guess if Apple will give it the go ahead), it might not be too long before we see an Opera browser on every smartphone operating system. If you’ve got an Android phone and want to check out the Opera Mini 5 Beta in the Android Market. Not got an Android phone but want one? Then check out our range of Android powered mobile phones here.

HTC Tattoo to get Android 2.1!

March 12, 2010 at 10:02 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

Got yourself a shiny new HTC Tattoo? Jealous of the updated versions of Android found on the likes of the Motorola Milestone and Google Nexus One? Well, don’t be, because HTC have confirmed that v2.1 is coming to to a Tattoo near you in the not too distant future.

The HTC Tattoo is the perfect device for those who want to get on the Android ladder. Boasting a cute and compact form factor, 2.8 inch touchscreen and smooth curved edges, the Tattoo is loaded with high end features, from HSDPA and Wi-Fi, to GPS and social networking integration.

Best of all, despite these high end features, the Tattoo doesn’t have a matching price tag. This budget Android smartphone is designed to bring Google’s OS to the masses and can be picked up on a £20 per month tariff with 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 10 months half price.

The catch? Well, the Tattoo has been left by the way side to an extent, stuck on version 1.6 of Google’s Android OS which is currently up to version 2.1 in other phones. But, HTC have confirmed that a planned software update will bring the Tattoo up to speed and bring with it the likes of Google Earth for Android and Gesture Search for Android.

HTC have confirmed that they are currently working on the upgrade for the Tattoo to combine Android v2.1 with HTC’s own Sense UI and whilst they wouldn’t give away any concrete dates, they have simply stated that they “expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon“. Keep an eye on the blog for more information as and when we get it.

Google launches Gesture Search for Android 2.0 phones and above

March 8, 2010 at 9:45 am by Hannah | In Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications, Mobile Phones

Google have officially announced the launch of Gesture Search, which is a new way of searching your Android phone’s content by simply writing letters on the screen with your finger.

Below is an explanation from Google themselves.

“Say you want to call your friend Anne. Just open Gesture Search and draw letter “A”, and Gesture Search returns a list of items that have words starting with “A”. If your handwriting isn’t all that neat, that’s okay. If the “A” you draw looks a bit like an “H”, as seen in the bottom left corner of the screenshot, “H” results will be brought up as well. If needed, you can also erase a query by crossing it horizontally: left to right erases the entire query, and right to left removes the last letter or space in the query. Now you can either scroll down the list to find Anne or write more letters to refine the search.”

Sounds like a pretty good and simple tool to use, and definitely a lot more convenient to use in public rather than voice search. If you fancy trying out the Gesture Search for yourself, search for it in the Android Market; it will only appear and be available to download for handsets running on Android 2.0 or higher. If recent rumours are correct, all Android phones will be upgrading to 2.1 meaning all Android users will be able to take advantage of the new Gesture Search tool.

Keep an eye on the blog for new Android mobile phone releases which will be sporting Gesture Search.

March 3, 2010 at 11:56 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

Nokia and Skype have today jointly announced the release of Skype for Symbian, a Skype client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian operating system. The Skype for Symbian app, available free in the Ovi Store, lets Nokia smartphone users access Skype on the move over Wi-Fi or using the phones data connection.

In addition to the obvious, free Skype to Skype calls anywhere in the world, the new Skype for Symbian app lets users make cheaper international calls, send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups, share pictures, videos and other files, see when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM and import names and numbers from the phone’s address book. Not bad for an app currently available for the princely sum of £0.

Speaking about the Skype for Symbian app, Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones at Nokia commented “Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users.”

Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype’s relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer.”

Skype for Symbian app is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen phones: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 GB, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 5320. Skype also plan to roll out the app to Symbian smartphones from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, meaning the Sony Ericsson Satio and upcoming Vivaz can both join in the fun.

WebOS 1.4 finally drops - Palm Pre officially gets video capture!

March 1, 2010 at 10:37 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

For Palm Pre owners, the past few weeks have been rife with rumours surrounding the WebOS 1.4 software update. With Palm themselves confirming that the update would be with us before February was out, forums were littered with rumoured roll-out dates that came and went with out so much of a peep from Palm. And so, when Friday the 26th came around, the last working day of February, with out any update, things were starting to look grim for Pre owners. But, like a phoenix from the flames, Palm rescued the situation and began rolling out the update on Friday evening here in the UK bringing joy to Pre owners across the globe and some much needed good PR in the wake of recent financial struggles.

The main update WebOS 1.4 brings is of course, the ability to record video. Video capture is added to the camera along with the ability to trim clips, ala’ the iPhone, share via MMS or email or upload to YouTube straight from the phone. The phone also improves the way new applications (or cards as Palm likes to call them) are launched. Previously a slight delay would be followed by a blank card on screen where as now we get an on-screen card with the logo of the app we’re opening and a small loading icon. Once the app has fully loaded it fills the screen meaning you never have to worry whether you’ve correctly selected to open an app. Amongst a host of other tweaks and enhancements, overall performance and battery life is also promised to improve. Click here for the full run down of what the update entails.

Not bad, but what about Flash support in the web browser? Cast your minds back to CES, where Palm first debuted WebOS 1.4, and you may remember that Adobe Flash support was also planned for the Palm Pre. Well, Palm were true to their word in that WebOS 1.4 does now support the Adobe Flash 10.1 Beta plugin, but you will have to wait for Adobe to release the standalone app in the App Catalog before you can start enjoying embedded video content and flash games on the move. Adobe have yet to release an expected launch date for the Flash Beta app so keep your eyes on the Blog and we’ll let you know as soon as we find out more.

Finally, the update also brought with it one extra treat for European Pre owners, who up until now have been some what neglected compared to the US who have been enjoying paid apps and 3D games in the app catalog for several months now. Need For Speed Underground, Monopoly and The Sims 3 have all popped up in the app catalog, ready to be downloaded. Free. That’s right, whilst our friends across the pond have to pay rather steep $9.99 for the afore mentioned games, we can enjoy the full titles absolutely free. We’re not sure whether it’s Palm or the games developers EA we need to thank for this act of kindness but regardless, there’ll be a few very happy Pre owners firing up their phones this morning.

Need a cab? There’s an app for that…

February 26, 2010 at 3:19 pm by Dan | In Just For Fun, Mobile Phone Applications

Here’s the scenario: You’re out in London. You need to get a cab but also want to keep an eye on your pennies. What do you do? Simple, pull out your iPhone. New to the App Store, London Taxi is a new app that promises to calculate the cost of a cab ride, taking into account the distance of the journey, time of day and even what sort of traffic you’re likely to encounter. Created by former employees of Transport for London, the app uses the TFL Taxi Tariff to calculate estimates.

And while they are just that, estimates, for just 59p, the app is definitely a must for commuters and tourists alike. Just try not to show off the app to any nearby cabbies as they may not be so welcoming of the new arrival to the app store.

Opera Mini for the iPhone announced!

February 25, 2010 at 9:16 am by Hannah | In Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications

The Opera Mini browser for mobile platforms has been released for a majority of the top mobile platforms including Symbian and Windows Mobile, however there seems to be one platform which has been missing out on the action…the iPhone. This won’t be the case for long though, as it was announced at the MWC 2010 that Opera Mini have a new version available for the iPhone. This doesn’t mean that Apple will accept this package, though. After all, the iPhone already has it’s very own Safari browser so why would they want to change to Opera Mini?

The main difference that makes Opera Mini stand out is the speed. This is a very fast browser. In fact, it’s 5 times faster than Safari which is already employed on the iPhone. If you wonder how Opera can manage this, it’s because Opera processes all web page information within its own server. Web pages are compressed by up to 90% of their original size, meaning users can benefit from both time and money savings when browsing the web. You can also synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial between mobile phones or a computer. But the question is, will Apple allow Opera to come and take over their browser? Watch this space.

HTC to deliver portfolio of Microsoft Windows Phone ‘7 series’ phones

February 22, 2010 at 11:22 am by Hannah | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News, Mobile Phone Applications, Mobile Phones

HTC have announced that they will bring Microsoft’s next generation of Windows phones – ‘Windows Phone 7 Series’ to the market later this year.

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2010, the new software for ‘7 Series’ offers a fresh approach to smart phones, by bringing together applications and content from the web to give the user a very personal and relevant experience. With this news, HTC builds on its Windows Phone leadership and extends its commitment to offering customers the most innovative mobile phone experiences available.

“Windows Phone 7 Series is a significant milestone for Microsoft, the industry and ultimately people looking to do more on their phones. HTC is working closely with Microsoft to bring the unique HTC experience that customers love,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC Corporation. “Microsoft has clearly listened to feedback from people and brought a new, fresh approach to the smartphone experience that is beautiful, powerful and compelling.”

For the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together the Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience to the mobile phone, exclusively on 7 Series phones. The design for Windows Phones 7 Series concentrates on every aspect, from its visually appealing layout and motion to its function and hardware integration.

On the Start screen, dynamically updated “live tiles” show users real-time content directly, breaking the mold of static icons that serve as an intermediate step on the way to an application. Create a tile of a friend, and the user gains a readable, up-to-date view of a friend’s latest pictures and posts, just by glancing at Start.

Every Windows Phone 7 Series phone will come with a dedicated hardware button for Bing, providing one-click access to search from anywhere on the phone, while a special implementation of Bing search provides intent-specific results, delivering the most relevant Web or local results, depending on the type of query.

“People are moving faster than ever, juggling more priorities and turning to technology to manage it all. Windows Phone 7 Series simplifies common tasks by bringing together related content from the web, applications and services into a single view to make life easier,” said Andy Lees, senior vice president of Mobile Communication Business at Microsoft. “We are pleased to work closely with HTC, a global leader in mobile phone technology and design, to bring new Windows phones to customers around the world.”

Keep an eye on the blog for further information on 7 Series handsets and release dates.
