User input required: What do you want to know about the Nokia X6?

January 29, 2010 at 10:01 am by Dan | In Mobile Phone Reviews

The beginning of 2010 has been a busy time for Nokia as the Finns entered a new era in the shape of the Maemo powered N900. But with the N900 hogging the lime light, it was perhaps easy to forget that Nokia had another touchscreen phone in the pipeline, the Nokia X6. Running the tried and tested Symbian operating system, it might have been easy to dismiss the X6 as simply the latest in a long line of Nokia releases, until we remind ourselves that the X6 is the first Nokia phone to sport a capacitive touchscreen.

You don’t have to look too hard to find someone online dismissing resistive touchscreen displays in favour of capacitive technology, a constant thorn in Nokia’s side as the Finns have, until now, opted for resistive displays in all of their touchscreen offerings. Does the new capacitive display finally put an end to those criticisms? Has Symbian matured enough in its touchscreen guise to put it back on a level playing field with the likes of the iPhone and Android phones?

Well, here at Mobiles.co.uk we’ve managed to bag ourselves an X6 and plan on giving the phone a thorough play-test to give you all the details but we need your help. What is it about the Nokia X6 that you’ve been dying to find out? What key feature would you like us to look at in more detail? Simply use the comments section below to post those burning questions and we’ll do our darnedest to cover them in our full Nokia X6 review next week. Keep an eye on the blog for more information.

Apple iPad: The aftermath

January 28, 2010 at 1:40 pm by Dan | In Mobile News

Even the most ardent hermits and shut-ins in the remotest corners of the globe will have found it hard to avoid yesterdays Apple announcement unveiling the iPad, Apple’s long awaited tablet. Billed as the portable device the Netbook should have been, the iPad boasts a stunning 9.7 inch LED-backlit touchscreen display employing capacitive technology allowing for multi-touch. Available in two flavours; a Wi-Fi only version and Wi-Fi + 3G, memory from 16GB to 64GB, Bluetooth, a 1GHz processor and compatibility with the vast majority of the iPhone’s 150,000+ apps, it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement.

There were, however, a few niggles that have left some Apple fans slightly unsatisfied in the wake of yesterdays grand unveiling, relating both to the iPad and Apple’s entire portfolio. As good as it looks, the iPad still has its cons and no one is quicker to point these out than the online community. Firstly, and this is quite a biggie, the iPad can’t multi-task. Period. No WebOS or N900 style multi-tasking for any of the iPad’s apps, just limited functionality with a select number of the pre-installed Apple applications. Secondly, unless Jobs and co. are keeping something from us, the iPad’s web browser still can’t handle flash content. Apple are keen to promote the iPad as the best web browsing experience ever but can this really be the case without full flash support? We’re not so sure.

We’re willing to forgive the lack of voice calls and camera as they just wouldn’t be usable in a device of the iPad’s size (think Dom Joly in the famous Trigger Happy TV skit) but a front facing camera wouldn’t have been unwelcome. But to be fair, when announcing a device that has been rumoured for so many years, it’s impossible to please everyone but overall, the overwhelming response to the iPad was definitely positive.

Yesterday had also been mooted as an opportunity for Apple to bolster the iPhone portfolio but sadly we’ll have to wait for iPhone OS 4.0 and the next installment in the iPhone family. iPhone users weren’t forgotten entirely though, as an updated version of the Software Development Kit (SDK), the software developers use to make apps for the iPhone, allows apps to make VoIP calls over 3G. At present this is tied to Wi-Fi hotspots but the update could finally allow Skype calls from anywhere with 3G coverage. Ok, so it’s not the updated multi-tasking OS we had hoped for but it’s better than nothing!

Apple iPad with built in 3G and Wi-Fi!

January 27, 2010 at 8:12 pm by Dan | In Mobile News

No, you’re not seeing things. We can confirm that, in addition to the base model with Wi-Fi connectivity built in, Apple will be releasing a top of the range 3G enabled iPad (with Wi-Fi to boot, naturally). Even more excitingly, Steve Jobs confirmed that deals are already in place with AT&T, the US network that currently offers the iPhone exclusively in the States, to offer the Apple iPad on a monthly contract with a set data allowance per month for on the move web browsing, emails and multimedia. And now for the bombeshell, courtesy of Mr Jobs; “So we have a breakthrough deal in the US. We hope to have our international deals in the June / July timeframe. However, all of the iPad 3G models are unlocked, and they use the new GSM microSIMs.” That’s right folks, the iPad’s headed our way as early as June and all iPad 3G’s will be unlocked!

Any word on pricing? Well, we’ll hand back over to Steve for this: “What should we price it at? If you listen to the pundits, we’re going to price it under $1000, which is code for $999. When we set out to develop this, we had ambitious tech goals, but we had aggressive price goals. And just like we were able to meet or exceed our tech goals, we have met our cost goals… iPad pricing starts at $499. So $499 for 16GB of iPad. That’s our base model. 32GB is $599, 64GB is $799. 3G models cost an extra $130. $629, 729, and 829 with 3G. We will be shipping these in 60 days. 3G models will ship in 90 days.”

So, pricing (for our friends across the pond at least) looks to be pretty competitive and the news that they’ll be launching around March/ April time should come as music to the ears of US based tech enthusiasts. We’ll have to wait a little longer here in the UK to get our grubby mits on the iPad but from what we’ve seen so far it should be well worth the wait. Summing up the iPad project, Apple’s founder and head honcho added “We’ve always tried to be at the intersection of technology and liberal arts — we want to make the best tech, but have them be intuitive. It’s the combination of these two things that have let us make the iPad.”

Apple iPad: More features revealed

January 27, 2010 at 7:22 pm by Dan | In Mobile News

Whilst most of you will be struggling to contain yourselves due to the excitement surrounding the iPad, Apple’s newly announced tablet, our thoughts are now turning to the features of the device. Sure, we’ve heard what Steve Jobs has planned for his new baby but aside from a revolutionary web browsing experience and excellent email capabilities, what can we expect from the iPad?

Here’s what we know so far:

  • 9.7 inch IPS Display
  • Full Capacitive multi-touch
  • 12.7 mm thick (almost as thin as the iPhone!)
  • Weight: 226 g
  • 16GB - 64GB Memory
  • 1GHz Apple A4 Processor
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity
  • Bluetooth v2.1
  • Accelerometer and Compass
  • Speaker and Microphone
  • Up to 10 hours Battery life
  • Over a month of Standby time!
  • Full support for iPhone apps!
  • iBook Store - download books, magazines and newspapers to your iPad!
  • iWork - create spreadsheets, documents etc. on your iPad!

And that’s your lot. Of course new information will become available over the coming hours, days and weeks, for now, lets pick a few of the headline specs to see what you should be excited about. First off, the thought of a 9.7 inch touchscreen with multi-touch support is staggering but seeing is believing - the quality of the iPad display is set to blow you away. A 1GHz processor is also a good move, almost double that of the iPhone 3GS and no one can accuse that of being sluggish.

But, you can keep your processors and your capacitive touchscreen displays; the feature that has us most intrigued is the app support. Whilst Apple pointed out that the iPad would run almost every single iPhone app (an impressive feat considering there’s some 150k available), they were also keen to show off some dedicated apps from a handful of developers who were given a sneak peak at the device. Considering they were only given the device two weeks ago, what the likes of EA and Gameloft have achieved in that time is mighty impressive and hints at potential that should have Sony and Nintendo worrying.

In addition to this, the new iBook store should finally see the eBook revolution hit the mainstream with a huge selection of books and subscription based magazine and newspaper downloads. View pictures, pinch to zoom, you can even change the font! The layout of the iBook store is presented in a similar style to iTunes which is no bad thing when you’re borrowing from the webs most successful download service.

Don’t go anywhere as we’ll be bringing you all the latest Apple news right here on the Mobiles Blog.

Apple officially announce the iPad Tablet!

January 27, 2010 at 6:29 pm by Dan | In Mobile News

Ladies and Gentleman. I give you… the Apple iPad. That’s right, across the pond at a dedicated event to show off their latest creation, Apple have officially lifted the lid on the Apple tablet. Yes after giving a brief overview of the companies excellent financial performance, making the bold claim that Apple are a bigger mobile device manufacturer than Nokia, Samsung and Sony and giving a brief trip down memory lane, Apple’s talismanic CEO Steve Jobs announced what we’ve all been waiting for in the shape of the iPad.

Whilst this news is hardly a surprise (come on, we all knew it was coming right?), it’s still hot off the press and so full specs and product images are literally being revealed as we type. So, who better to hand over to than Mr Apple himself, Steve Jobs, to outline what they have in store for the iPad. Speaking to the eager crowds gathered at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, Jobs commented “We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a magical and revolutionary product today…SO all of us use laptops and smartphones… the question has arisen; is there room for something in the middle. We’ve wondered for years as well — in order to create that category, they have to be far better at doing some key tasks… better than the laptop, better than the smartphone.”

“What kind of tasks? Browsing the web. Doing email. Enjoying and sharing pics. Watching videos. Enjoying music. Playing games. Reading ebooks. If there’s gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks — otherwise it has no reason for being. Now some people thought that was a netbook — the problem is that netbooks aren’t better than anything! We think we’ve got something that is better. And we call it the iPad. So, gonna give you a little overview. It’s very thin — you can change the homescreen to whatever you want. What this device does is extraordinary. You can browse the web with it. It’s the best web experience you’ve ever had.”

“So that’s browsing the web. Let’s go to email. Now if I want to send a message, I hit compose — up pops this gorgeous keyboard. Next, photos… this is what photos looks like. I can look at everything as a list of photos. I can tap on it…You get the idea.”

Well Apple have finally lifted the lid on the Apple tablet or the iPad as we’ll all have to get used to calling it now. Can they do the same to mobile computing as they have done to the mobile phone industry? You wouldn’t bet against them. We’ll stay with the Apple event to give you more breaking news as and when we get it but for now just let your imagination run wild as to the possibilities of the iPad…

It seems everyone, from analysts and network executives to technology experts and now even book publishers have confirmed the existance of the Apple Tablet. and, while you’d be crazy to bet against today being the day for the grand iSlate unveiling, could Apple have something else tucked up their sleeve ready to unleash to their eager public?

Motorola Milestone available to pre-order at Mobiles.co.uk!

January 27, 2010 at 12:06 pm by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, New Mobile Phones

That’s right, the Motorola Milestone, Motorola’s second foray into the world of Android, is now available to pre-order at Mobiles.co.uk. Hailed as the best Android phone yet when it was released in the states late last year as the Motorola Droid, can Motorola repeat that success story with the Milestone? Read on as we take a look at the Motorola Milestone in more detail.

From the outset, it’s clear Motorola where intent on making the greatest Android phone around and this is evident in both the design and software. The Milestone sports a staggering 3.7 inch touchscreen display with an eye watering WVGA resolution. Not just easy on the eye, the Milestone touchscreen puts Android on a par with the iPhone for responsiveness employing capacitive technology and supporting multi-touch for pinch zooming. The Milestone is all about user choice and the design echoes this. Not only does the phone boast a touchscreen right up there with the best in the business and support an on screen keyboard, the Milestone also includes a slide out QWERTY keyboard and navigation key pad. Not bad for a phone under 14mm thick.

Not just a world beater on the outside, the Milestone has a massive advantage on the inside with the honor of being the first European launch to run version 2.0 of the Android operating system. Android v2.0 sees the operating system come of age with several new tweaks such as easier messaging with quick contact - a task bar which shows the various methods to communicate - improvements to the camera user interface, on screen keyboard and web browser, support for Bluetooth v2.1 and a general tightening of the OS as a whole. Using Android 2.0 from a 1.6 device wont feel radically different but the new additions amount to an ever improving platform that goes from strength to strength.

The Milestone is powered by a built in ARM Cortex A8 600MHz processor, as seen in the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre, and is supported by 256MB of RAM ensuring general navigation of menus, launching apps and running multiple applications (yes, the Milestone can multi-task) are all handled without the phone breaking a sweat. HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity ensure web browsing is handled with adequate zip whilst the built in GPS receiver is supported by Motonav navigation software (sadly no voice guided Google maps for us brits). The built in 5.0 Megapixel camera includes a dual LED flash, autofocus, zoom and geo-tagging, 133MB internal memory is bolstered by a MicroSD card slot supporting up to 32GB cards and rounding off the features is the usual array of multimedia playback options that make the Milestone the perfect portable multimedia player.

The Motorola Milestone is available to pre-order now at Mobiles.co.uk on Orange where you can get it free on a £30 per month tariff with 600 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data per month. With first stock expected on the 12th of February, there’s never been a better time to join the Android revolution! Click here to check out more offers on the Motorola Milestone.

HTC Bravo spotted in the wild again!

January 27, 2010 at 9:29 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

UPDATE: The Bravo has now been officially announced as the HTC Desire! Click here to find out more!
The more we see of this device the more we want to know about it and judging by the frequency of public outings, it’s surely only a matter of time before this thing gets officially unveiled. We are of course talking about the HTC Bravo, the Android powered touchscreen phone that many expect to be the non-Google experience version of the Nexus One. However, the latest leaked images show off one small detail that could make a very big difference.

With both phones sporting a 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen and the Bravo rumoured to include a 5.0 Megapixel camera, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and running on Android v2.1, not to mention a strikingly similar design, it’s easy to see why this is being dubbed as the non Google Nexus One. But, on closer inspection there does appear to be one major difference; the Bravo features an optical trackpad. Check out the image above (courtesy of Omio, thanks guys!) and we can clearly see the omission.

The HTC designed Google Nexus One, much like the Hero and umpteen BlackBerry phones before it, opts for a trackball. The problem here is that handsets in the past that have opted for a trackball have been plagued with reliability issues with the ball itself bogged down with dirt and prone to getting stuck, making navigation a nightmare. In contrast to this, an optical trackpad offers similar levels of responsiveness without any of the downfalls as it lacks the nooks and crannies which serve as the trackballs weakspot.

The upgrade from the BlackBerry Bold to the new Bold 9700 saw the trackball ditched in favour of an optical trackpad, a decision which was greeted with much praise. And so, despite the fact that the Nexus One is designed and manufactured by the Taiwanese company, could HTC have saved the best stuff for their own in house project? Will the Bravo pip its stablemate to the top of the Android pile when both phones are released here in the UK later on in the year? Only time will tell.

Vodafone already sold over 100,000 iPhone’s!

January 26, 2010 at 11:18 am by Hannah | In Mobile Networks, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Since the launch of the iPhone on Vodafone on 14th January 2010, the company has reported to have sold 100,000 units of both the 3G and 3GS variants. The network stated that they sold 50,000 on launch date and a further 50,000 units over an 8 day period.

Vodafone UK CEO Guy Lawrence states “The demand from both consumers and business customers has been phenomenal. They want an outstanding phone on an outstanding network and we’re delivering that”.

When O2 first launched the iPhone they did not release figures, but they have been weighed down by problems with network speed and reliability since the launch, which is exactly what Vodafone are promoting as their strongest asset.

At a CBR event in London, Enterprise Directer Peter Kelly stated “If people are going to deploy smart devices, and specifically the iPhone, it’s really important that you have a network you can trust, a network that’s reliable”.

“We continue to roll out and strengthen our network- more than one thousand new sites were rolled out in the UK last year, and we continue to invest tens and hundreds of millions of pounds in our network this year”.

So what is it that has made the Vodafone iPhone so popular? The tariff options are pretty similar to those of O2 and Orange, with the main difference being texts. for £35+ 18 month contracts and all 24 month contracts users can enjoy unlimited texts which is a lot more appealing than the rather modest 500 on offer from O2 and Orange. If you fancy finding out more about the iPhone 3GS then click here for more info and grab yours today from mobiles.co.uk.
