Nokia officially unveil the Nokia N900!

August 28, 2009 at 10:25 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

At this rate, Nokia aren’t going to have anything left to reveal at Nokia World come next week; the Finns have officially lifted the lid on the Nokia N900. No more making do with leaked images and rumoured specs, this things the real deal and is set to blow the touchscreen market wide open. So what’s so impressive about the new Maemo powered N900? What features have surfaced that weren’t in the original leak? What else do you need to know about Nokia’s next big handset? Read on to find out…

It will come as no surprise to learn that the N900 will run on the Linux based Maemo operating system. Maemo 5 supports multi tasking letting users run multiple applications at once. Managing open applications and switching to and from as well as closing programs is made simple thanks to the dashboard. Hit the dashboard key and you’ll be given an overview of what’s currently running. Symbian phones have been doing this kind of thing for years but the way Maemo effortlessly handles multi-tasking is what sets it apart from the rest. This is backed up further by a 600MHz ARM processor putting it in line with the likes of the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre in terms of processing power. The impressive processor is backed up by up to 1GB of application memory; 256 MB RAM and 768 MB of virtual memory. Other perks of Maemo include the option to download apps from a dedicated Maemo app store, add widgets and shortcuts to the home screen and set up several home screens which you can then customise and navigate between similar to HTC’s Sense UI on the Hero.

Nokia are also confident Maemo can offer the next step in mobile web browsing. Sporting a browser powered by Mozilla technology, the N900 promises to deliver the internet as it would look on any computer with full support for Adobe Flash 9.4 meaning online videos and interactive applications run flawlessly on the phone. Combine that with the beautiful 3.5 inch WVGA touchscreen display and slide out QWERTY keyboard and you’ll be surfing like a pro in no time. The touchscreen is, as previous reports suggested, resistive so while this rules out any kind of multi-touch input, it does mean a stylus can be used and also, Nokia claim, promises to be their most responsive and user friendly touchscreen effort to date with kinetic scrolling offering the kind of navigation found on Apples celebrated touchscreen device. The leaks we’ve previously covered were also spot on in terms of the design of the phone. With a design that looks like a cross between the iPhone and a Nokia N96, the N900 looks great; sleek, classy and powerful. As it’s wider than the N97 it also looks sturdier and while it lacks the tilting slide mechanism, it makes up for it with an N96-esque kickstand. Be warned though, this phone is no light-weight. At 181 g and 18mm thick, the N900 certainly makes its presence known.

What else can we expect? Well, the N900 packs in a 5.0 Megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and Dual LED Flash. The N900 sports the same memory capacity and expansion options as the N97; 32GB onboard and 16GB respectively. HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS are all pretty much a given and the N900 also implements some new Geo-tagging features meaning that for once it may be more than just a novelty in a camera phone. At a glance the N900 lacks a headlining feature. There’s no 12 Megapixel camera or HD video capture, Nokia are instead targeting the user experience in the same way Apple and Android has shifted the focus. Nice touches such as grouping Emails, texts and instant messages together so they appear as one conversation clearly shows Nokia is learning from its peers.

Without a doubt, the Nokia N900 is one of the most important phones for Nokia in years. Get it right and the late comer to the touchscreen party could be catapulted to the top of the pile. Wrong and the N900 will be branded as just another iPhone wannabe. With the N900 expected to launch as early as October, we wont have to wait long to find out how Nokia’s most powerful touchscreen measures up. Ever wanted a MINI Road-side assistance application?

August 27, 2009 at 1:41 pm by Mark | In Just For Fun, Mobile Content/Services, Mobile Gadgets

No? Well, neither have we but MINI USA have teamed up with Allstate to make one for the iPhone anyway. We don’t very often publish news from America but we doubt this will remain on the wrong side of the pond for very long.

And, as pointless as it seems on first encounter, after watching the promo video, we actually quite like the idea, the only slight problem we have with it; it’s American, and whether or not the UK is to be blessed with such an app is yet to be seen . (It can’t be long before other car manufacturers do something similar surely?)

The new app allows the owner to schedule services, access trouble shooting guides and place tow requests for those times the car isn’t, well… at its best . The application automatically submits the location and car details for you, so you spend less time having to spell out every detail of your car two or three times because the operator on the other end can’t hear a word over the traffic belting past, beeping their horns and shouting obscenities.

As the video shows, the user can enter all of the details of the car, which will be then submitted to the company, with even the ability to give the car a nickname, quite what the relevance of the cars nickname is to the mechanic we don’t know, but we’re pretty sure its a feature female MINI owners will love.

Whether or not this service works well or even at all, we don’t know, what we do know is, for those of you sitting with a Blackberry Curve or Bold in your pocket, you need not feel left out as the application would be available for you too, if they ever bring it to the UK.

Nokia 5230 teaser video!

August 26, 2009 at 3:08 pm by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

If you weren’t quite satisfied with simple specs and images and instead wanted to see the new Nokia 5230 in action, the guys and gals over at the official Nokia Blog, Nokia Conversations, have the answer to your prayers with a teaser video showing off the new phone in glorious video! Check out our previous post for the full run down but for a quick recap, the Nokia 5230 is the latest touchscreen phone from Nokia that plans on filling the gap between the recently released 5530 XpressMusic and its bigger brother, the 5800. The 5230 earns its entry level status by shedding Wi-Fi and opting for a 2.0 Megapixel camera but ups the ante over the 5530 by including HSDPA connectivity and A-GPS. From the video below, it seems Nokia have abandoned the stainless steel casing used (to great effect) in the 5530 in favour of a return to more simplistic plastics. But hey, no ones perfect. Enough spoilers, check out the video below for a sneak peak at Nokia’s latest touchscreen phone (and i get flack for wearing a ring in our videos - tell that to the person dripping in jewelery in this vid!).

Nokia expand touchscreen range further with the 5230!

August 26, 2009 at 10:15 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Though late to embrace touchscreen technology, Nokia certainly seem intent on making up for lost time with a host of touchscreen phones on the horizon. We’re not talking about the N97 Mini or the N900 Maemo (expect more from those next week at Nokia World), no, today Nokia has unveiled to the world the Nokia 5230, a new touchscreen phone that plans to fill the gap (we didn’t know existed) between the Nokia 5530 and 5800 XpressMusic. Want to know more about the latest offering from the boy and girls from Espoo? Read on…

Despite the 5xxx model number, Nokia have opted not to garnish the 5230 with the XpressMusic branding of its peers. Don’t be fooled though, music is still very much in the 5230’s mindset but more on that shortly. The 5230 features a 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels; the same display found in the 5800. We also find the usual suspects such as an accelerometer, proximity sensor and handwriting recognition. No word yet whether the 5230 will ship with a stylus or if it actually accommodates a slide out one in the body itself but as the touchscreen is resistive, you can be sure it will work with one all the same. The 5230 runs on Symbian offering the usual host of customisation options, downloadable apps from the Ovi Store and the new scrolling contacts bar (as first featured in the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic) which lets you add up to 20 of your favourite contacts, with an accompanying photo, to the home screen for quick and easy access.

The 5230 also takes a leaf out of the 5530’s book with a heavy emphasis on social networking. The phone features shortcuts to YouTube, Facebook and MySpace giving you one touch access to literally millions of people across the globe. The scrolling contacts bar will also give you access to status updates and conversations through social networking sites. Better still, Ovi Share lets you share all your photos with friends and family similar to photo sharing site Flickr.

If all this is starting to sound a little familiar it’s not surprising so lets take a look at what sets the 5230 apart from its stable mates. Firstly, the 5230 features a 2.0 Megapixel camera positioning itself below the 3.15 Megapixel camera found on the 5530 and 5800. Where the 5230 does excel for an entry level phone is in the connectivity options available. Firstly, the 5230 dispenses with the less commonly used Wi-Fi found in the 5530 in favour of HSDPA connection. This offers a massive advantage as you’re no longer restricted to Wi-Fi hotspots to get your high speed web fix. The second, and perhaps even more impressive addition to the 5230 is that of A-GPS offering a host of navigation solutions and with Ovi Maps pre-installed on the device.

So; out goes Wi-Fi and the 3.15 Megapixel camera and in comes HSDPA, A-GPS and a 2.0 Megapixel shooter. If the Nokia 5230 can stay within touching distance of the price of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, Nokia could be on to a winner. Click here to check out the Nokia 5230 in full and keep an eye on the Blog for all the latest announcements from Nokia in the run up to Nokia World (though at the rate Nokia are revealing new products they may well have run out by Tuesday!).

LG Arena reaches one million sales

August 26, 2009 at 8:14 am by Hannah | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Since the LG Arena (otherwise known as LG KM900) went on sale just 5 months ago, LG are now happy to report that sales worldwide have reached over one million. Before the handset was even launched, there was a surge of carriers and distributors all over Europe signing up for pre-orders and requests of the Arena. Currently the KM900 is being sold in 53 countries, with intense interest from new carriers in countries including France, Portugal and Romania.

LG president Dr. Skott Ahn states: “We live in an age where mobile phones are tools for entertaining and staying connected to the world. The LG Arena was developed to draw on this trend and LG has reached the pinnacle in terms of functionality and user convenience, which has been reflected in the consumer uptake. Considering the swift sales success of this device, it is true that real innovation comes from customers, so we will keep going out of our way to gain their insights and reflect their needs in our products.”

So why has the LG Arena been so popular? Well for starters the handset looks very stylish at just 12mm thick and with a sleek brushed metal finish, and with quality features such as a 5.0 megapixel camera with autofocus and video capture, 3.0 inch touch screen display and built in GPS you are sure to be getting your money’s worth. The Arena was also the first phone from LG to feature its 3D S-Class user interface, designed to enable users to have fast and easy access to content.

From the sounds of things, LG are going to take on board feedback from their customers more often to create mobile devices to suit their needs, as this will increase demand and will help drive sales. If you fancy getting your hands on the LG Arena then click here, or to have a look at deals on other LG phones click here.

Nokia N900 Maemo gets official…sort of

August 25, 2009 at 4:00 pm by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

All eyes will be on Stuttgart next week at the Nokia World event where we expect to see at least two official announcements in the shape of the N97 Mini and the N900. And let’s be honest, it’s the latter everyone’s really interested in isn’t it? All we’ve had to go on so far is some leaked images of what is believed to be Nokia’s next flagship phone being liberated from its box. All very nice but what about something a little more official? Well, a photo has surfaced online claiming to be just what we were hankering for: feast your eyes on the new Nokia N900 (we hope).

In its new glossy guise, the N900 looks far classier than we ever imagined possible. The comparisons with the iPhone will undoubtedly be made, then again any new touchscreen phone suffers the same fate. From the photo, the Nokia N900 conceals its slide out QWERTY keyboard well and should feel just as natural whether using the keyboard or just the touchscreen. We’re still remaining skeptical on this one until Nokia come out and officially unveil the N900 but if the leaked photo turns out to be the real deal, Nokia’s latest offering could be its best looking yet.

As for the phone itself, naturally concrete information is fairly thin on the ground. The most publicised feature is obviously the Maemo operating system as it will be the first time Nokia has opted for anything other than Symbian in a flagship device (with Maemo ordinarily reserved for internet tablets). The N900 (or RX-51 or Rover as it’s also been known) will apparently include an improved processor and more RAM compared to the N97, Nokia’s current top dog. Other likely features include 32GB of internal memory, a 5.0 Megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS, an FM transmitter expandable memory.

Without an upgraded camera or some other popular new features such as HD video capture, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. But, compared to the N97, the beefed up processor, improved RAM, a better touchscreen and most importantly the Maemo operating system should ensure the N900 is equipped to take on the iPhone head on. Expected to be officially announced next week, keep an eye on the Blog for all the latest info.

Smartphones: Making us work-a-holics?

August 25, 2009 at 12:48 pm by Mark | In Just For Fun

A recent survey of 600 smartphone owning employees, has shown that actually, in addition to simplifying our lives by making everything more accessible, this same notion of accessibility is resulting in the average employee working up to 15 hours longer each week. How? well, having the ability to access email directly and instantly on handsets like the Blackberry Curve 8520/8900, which is a firm favourite amongst the work-a-holics, means that even away from the office, we’re still spending time tapping away, checking and responding to work email.

An employment law firm, Peninsula, have moved to state that the average working week has now extended to 55 hours, with Managing Director Peter Bone adding, “It is important for staff to spend quality time away from the office, spending time with the family, or undertaking recreational activities rather than tapping away responding to client emails or deadlines so that they keep a healthy work/life balance.”

Mr. Bone also stated, “Employees should be encouraged to take appropriate rest breaks if they do choose to continue working out of hours. Having a well rested employee with a good work/life balance is a lot more useful than a tired employee that put one too many hours in the night before.”

We completely agree with this, so, anyone joining us for a siesta?

Windows Mobile HTC Leo leaks

August 25, 2009 at 8:23 am by Mark | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, New Mobile Phones

UPDATE: The HTC Leo has now been officially announced as the HTC HD2! Click here to check out all the details on the HTC HD2!
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the possible new HTC Leo, early rumors and rendering showed us a clamshell, more rumors and images released only the other day hinted at the Leo being a slider. Today, yet more images and rumors are circulating, and guess what? Yep, these images show the HTC Leo to be a block phone, no slider, and no clamshell. And we’re pleased to say that actually the current images look more likely to be images of a production-ready Leo than the previous.

Looking at the photos, we have to say, we quite like the look of it, it’s a sleek and simple looking thing, that, from what we can tell, will be similar in dimensions to the current HTC Hero (only without the curved chin at the bottom). On the front of the phone, unlike models such as the HTC Touch HD, the Leo gains what appears to be 5 ordinary buttons for making and ending calls, selecting etc.

One noticeable difference to other HTC models, is that the Leo is very slim, in fact, the rumors say that it is only 11mm thick, which considering in this rather simple, sleek looking phone, lies the heart of a true beast (by this we refer to the 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM 8250 processor - which is set to give the HTC Leo some awesome processing power) is very impressive. The Leo is also expected to rock Windows Mobile 6.5 which hints at a launch towards the end of the year.

We’re also happy to report that early specs that were circulating are supported by this story. Including a 3 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5MP autofocus camera with flash, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.5mm headset jack.

What tomorrow’s news stories have in store for the HTC Leo we don’t know, but we hope that very little, if anything at all, is altered from the current spec or look of the phone.
