Bellperre Nero Gold: Credit crunch? What credit crunch?

April 30, 2009 at 8:46 am by Dan | In Just For Fun

With all the current talk of financial meltdown and economies in crisis, nothing cheers us up more than a ridiculously extravagant (not to mention expensive) mobile phone. Well, the folks over at Italian luxury phone designers Bellperre have just the ticket with the Bellperre Nero Gold.

Like its predecessors from Bellperre (no, we’ve never heard of em’ either!), the Nero Gold is hand crafted from the finest luxury materials. And of course, because the rich and famous couldn’t bare to have the same phone as other Nero Gold owners, each is custom built to the owners requirements with a choice of materials on offer including aluminum, steel or titanium, the choice of either gold or silver plating and a range of different leather finishes and colours. Classy.

As for the phone, what operating system is worthy of the exquisite exterior? Windows Mobile of course. Which in turn means the Nero Gold gets Winmo extras such as push email and a variety of office applications which is a pleasant surprise in a phone of this ilk.

What features are included in this fine piece of craftsmanship? Well for your (considerable amount of) money you get a built in camera with video (though no word on resolution), MP3 player, Bluetooth, mini USB port, Java, Tri-band and a 2.0 inch display made from unscratchable (a bold claim) Sapphire Crystal. Not bad, but not likely to worry the likes of the Tocco Ultra or LG Arena!

No word on pricing yet but with previous models from Bellperre going for around £11.500, it’s safe to assume the Nero Gold will be on the exciting side of £10k. And no, you won’t get a free PS3 with it.

Samsung i7500 confirmed as Samsung’s first Android phone!

April 29, 2009 at 10:31 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Whether it was intentional or not, O2 Germany have confirmed the existence of the Samsung i7500, a touchscreen phone with a difference; it’s packing Android! That’s right, the first phone to run on the Google Android operating system not made by HTC will be released by Samsung.

Android is an open source operating system that allows anyone to develop software. The benefit of Android applications is that Android does not differentiate between the phone’s core applications and third-party applications. They can all be built to have equal access to a phone’s capabilities providing users with a broad spectrum of applications and services. With devices built on the Android Platform, users are able to fully tailor the phone to their interests. The other benefit of the Google backed Android OS is full support for Google services such as GMail, Google Maps with street view and YouTube.

Away from the OS, the Samsung i7500 is an exciting proposition. The phone features a 3.2 inch touchscreen using OLED technology for a vivid crystal clear display. The touchscreen features capacitive technology meaning that the screen reacts solely to the touch of your finger (rather than the stylus) making for a far more accurate and user friendly navigation method. An accelerometer and handwriting recognition round off the impressive touchscreen.

Elsewhere, the Samsung i7500 blows its Android predecessors out of the water in the camera department thanks to a 5.0 Megapixel camera with autofocus and a flash plus video capture. The MP3 player is nicely complimented by a 3.5mm audio jack meaning you can use any standard headphones (though generally Samsung bundled accessories are more than adequate). Connectivity is covered thanks to HSDPA and Wi-Fi which should work well with the excellent web browser. Built in GPS provides navigation and Geo-tagging for those priceless pics.

And if you thought the i7500 looked good on paper, wait till you see it in the flesh. Easily the best looking Android phone (and one of the better looking touchscreen phones), the i7500 looks effortlessly cool in brushed black metal and premium materials not to mention measuring in at just 11.9mm thick!

With no confirmed UK networks yet (this one’s an O2 exclusive in Germany) and set to launch this summer, click here to keep updated!

Samsung Tocco Lite helps Bolster the Tocco range!

April 27, 2009 at 11:57 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

The Tocco family just got a brand new addition after Samsung confirmed the S5230 will be launched as the Samsung Tocco Lite here in the UK. The latest member of the Tocco range again serves up touchscreen technology but with the Lite moniker, have Samsung stripped out the goodies?

The answer is a satisfying and resounding no! The S5230 Tocco Lite features a crystal clear 3.0 inch touchscreen display supporting Handwriting recognition, a built in Accelerometer and something called Gesture Lock which allows you to lock the handset with a customisable gesture on the touchscreen. The phone itself runs on the popular Samsung TouchWIZ user interface which gives you an interactive menu bar from which you can drag and drop shortcuts (or Widgets as Samsung like to call them) on to the home screen. This plays out like a simpler and more user friendly Symbian homescreen that’s definitely alot easier on the eye.

The Tocco Lite features 3.15 Megapixel camera which is more than capable of handling any situation thrown at it. Samsung have also included Smile detection (the camera will focus but then only capture the image once your subject is smiling) which is a nice addition to an already competent camera. Video capture is also on the cards at a sturdy 15 frames per second in QVGA resolution.

As for music and video playback, the Tocco Lite will support MP3, AAC and MPEG4, among others, and the addition of a micro SD memory card slot means the fun doesn’t have to end at the 50MB internal memory. A built in FM Radio and Bluetooth v2.1 (allowing music to be streamed wirelessly to a compatible headset) further boost the Tocco Lite’s credentials as a portable multi media player.

It seems the only place the Tocco Lite earns its ‘Lite’ tag is in the connectivity department as Samsung have dispensed with 3G connectivity in favour of standard GPRS support. We can hardly complain as Samsung had to cut some features otherwise the Tocco Lite would’ve just turned out too similar to the original.

The Tocco Lite, Samsungs answer to the hugely successful LG Cookie, is expected to launch in mid May. Set to launch in two colours, Black and an exclusive pink version for Mobiles.co.uk, part of the Carphone Warehouse. To register for updates click here for the Black Tocco Lite and here for the exclusive Pink version.

The Nokia E75 Now Available To Pre Order At Mobiles.co.uk!

April 23, 2009 at 8:29 am by Jack | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones

The Nokia E75, the latest Nokia Smartphone in the ever growing E-series is now available to pre-order at Mobiles.co.uk. It is the first Nokia Smartphone to feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard which is perfect for all those text and email fanatics. Style-wise it would appear to be a sort of cross between the conventionally sliding E66 and the E90, the latest incarnation of Nokia’s long-established hinged Qwerty-keyboard business phones. However, Nokia have now fully admitted that it has taken “a lot of inspiration from the Nokia 9300”, which was its very first Communicator. This return to roots can be clearly seen throughout the E75.

This E75 runs on the Symbian 9.3 operating system with S60 software. It boasts a 2.4 inch screen with 16 million colours on a LCD display, which is by no means the biggest screen ever seen on a Nokia but perfectly fine and easy to use in its own right. The homescreen has 2 pre set screen options allowing you to customise it to your personal needs for the easiest operation possible. Navigating the menu on the Nokia E75 is easy thanks to the use of the “Navi key”. Having the Navi key allows Nokia to drastically reduce the number of keys on the handset because the user interface is intuitive, it will show options on the screen that are related in some way to what function on the E75 you are currently using. The majority of functions can therefore be activated by just pressing the Navi key, meaning not only a far more elegant design but less overall key interaction with the phone skimming to and from menu’s.

If you want to stay in touch with your business by email or internet then the E75 has Nokia web browsing, WI-FI, GPRS and HSDPA all of which will help you get speedy connection to the internet. The Nokia E75 has definitely been built with email in mind offering support for POP3, SMTP and Mail for exchange. Some other great features on the E75 are a 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus, LED flash and digital zoom, as well as a video recorder with Hi-resolution VGA and video streaming. However the main application on the Nokia E75 has to be QuickOffice. This software allows you to create, edit and update Microsoft Office documents like text documents and Spreadsheets. The applications included within the QuickOffice suite are Quickbook for text files, Quicksheet for spreadsheets and Quickpoint for your presentation files.

As Smartphones go, the Nokia E75 has everything arranged onboard to make it a very successful and welcome addition to the E Series range. The E75 has a great spec list and will be exceptional whether it’s used for business or pleasure.

The E75 3G Smartphone is available now to buy on pre order at Mobiles.co.uk on either Orange or O2. It comes in the standard black design with silver trim however other colours have been rumoured so make sure you check the blog at a later date. To Pre Order the E75 please click here.

Sony Ericsson announce Entertainment Unlimited range featuring Idou and W995! Could the PSP phone finally see the light of day too?!

April 22, 2009 at 10:23 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Sony Ericsson are launching a new range of handsets under the title Entertainment Unlimited featuring the previously announced 12.1 Megapixel Idou and Walkman branded W995 plus one more which has yet to be officially unveiled. If you read into this a little, Sony Ericsson could well be giving away a little more than they intended! The Idou has photography covered whilst the W995 is first and foremost, a music phone so what could the third in the trio of Entertainment Unlimited phones feature as its headliner? Could this finally see the release of the fabled PSP phone? Or perhaps the rumoured Sony Ericsson Android device will fall under the new Entertainment Unlimited umbrella?

While details on this third device are thin on the ground (in fact they’re non-existant, all we know is it’s coming), we do know enough about the other two to get tongues wagging. The Sony Ericsson dropped a 12.1 Megapixel bomb on the mobile phone industry when it announced the Idou. Apart from the 12.1 Megapixel camera carrying the famous Cyber-Shot branding and a Xenon flash (though this alone makes us want one more than anything!), the Idou features an impressive 3.5 inch touchscreen running on an all new Symbian operating system from the Symbian Foundation. If you haven’t seen the demo video currently doing the rounds, think iPhone OS meets Walkman and you’ll have an idea how the new Symbian software is shaping up.

As for the W995, while it sports the most powerful camera ever found on a Walkman branded device (8.1 Megapixel), music is very much at the forefront of the W995’s make up. Running the latest version of the Walkman software provides a slick interface and easy access to all your music whilst the N96 style kickstand turns your phone into a miniature boom box (and also doubles as a handy video player) and Sony Ericsson’s plans to include an 8GB card in the retail pack will prove the icing on the cake for music lovers. Click here to check out what we thought of the W995 when we put it through its paces.

And so we are left salivating over the first two entertainment unlimited phones and guessing at how the third mystery phone will shape up (please PSP phone, please PSP phone, please PSP phone!). With the Sony Ericsson W995 set to launch in June, click here to sign up for updates. Click here for the Sony Ericsson Idou (set to launch later in the year) and keep your eyes on the Blog for news on the third phone!

LG GD900 Crystal: First Impressions!

April 21, 2009 at 10:07 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile Phone Reviews, Mobile Phones

With the dust barely settled from the announcement of the worlds first phone to feature a fully transparent keypad, Mobiles.co.uk have managed to get hold of an LG GD900 Crystal over a month before it’s officially due to launch here in the UK. Read on for our first impressions…

The feature that has everyone talking is without question the transparent touch pad so without wasting any time, let’s get stuck in. First things first, LG really aren’t kidding, the slide out keypad is completely see through. Made from a high quality plastic (though you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for glass), the keypad dispenses with physical buttons for full touch sensitive navigation. The numbers/ letters of the alpha-numeric keypad are etched into the plastic so you’ll have to rely on your sight, though this isn’t a problem as when the phone is switched on the keypad is completely illuminated. It’s difficult not to get carried away with the GD900 Crystal’s transparent keypad but put simply, it’s a work of art.

Not just a feast for the eyes, the keypad is also a joy to use. General input and dialing numbers is handled with ease whilst the more technical features are just as impressive. Gesture control is one of the GD900’s other celebrated features. Basically, drawing certain symbols on the touchpad acts as a shortcut. For instance, draw an ‘M’ and you will be taken to the music player. As if this isn’t impressive enough on its own, the fact that these are fully customisable opens the door for all sorts of fun and immaturity for creating your own shortcuts. The touchpad also doubles as a mouse for web browsing and again this works incredibly well. A drawback of conventional touchscreen phones is that your finger is in the way when you’re navigating but this isn’t the case with the GD900 Crystal so you can enjoy the excellent 3 inch display.

The excellent Crystal touchpad and 3.0 inch touchscreen would be nothing if the software wasn’t up to scratch so thankfully the GD900 runs flawlessly on S-Class. First seen on the Arena, S-Class UI presents users with a 3D menu styled as a cube. Swiping across the screen flicks to different sides of the screen and displays different applications such as multimedia and calling options. Similar to Symbian phones and Samsung’s TouchWIZ UI, S-Class puts all your most frequently used applications at your fingertips. Better still, because the touchscreen on the GD900 Crystal is capacitive (reacting specifically to the touch of your finger rather than a stylus), everything sticks to your fingertip like glue and flows fast and fluidly without any delay. In addition to the 3D cube, a traditional menu can also be opened which separates applications into categories and then lets you flick through. LG have been making alot of noise about the S-Class interface and after spending time using it, you start to realise why.

When a phone oozes as much style and class as the GD900 Crystal does, it’s often easy to assume that the features of the phone will suffer but this is where LG really have an ace up their sleeve. First and foremost, LG have packed in a world class camera. The 8.0 Megapixel camera is complimented by Autofocus, Face detection, digital zoom, a powerful LED flash and high resolution video capture. The camera in our sample wasn’t the finished article but was still quick, easy to use and produced some excellent photos. The multimedia player supports the usual range of different audio and video file formats including DivX and Xvid for high resolution video playback without clogging up your memory, not that you’ll need to worry as the GD900 Crystal supports up to 16GB of expandable memory (our sample had 240MB on board memory as well though LG are yet to confirm what the final product will include). Multimedia can be accessed with ease either via the S-Class UI or taking advantage of the gesture controls of the touchpad. Once open you can browse by artist, album, track and playlist and the lay out resembles that found on current gen iPods (not to mention the iPhone 3G) letting you flick through the album covers.

The GD900 Crystal also features HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity turning the phone into a capable web browser. Using multi touch technology, you can pinch the screen (or the keypad come to think of it) to zoom in or out on web pages and handwriting recognition allows you to input text on the touchpad whilst leaving the screen clear for your viewing pleasure. The handwriting recognition is very forgiving compared to similar software found on other phones and the fact it can be input on either the screen or the keypad is incredible. A-GPS can be used both for navigation and Geo-tagging photos though i was unable to test these at the time of writing.

From my time with the LG GD900 Crystal I’m almost lost for words at what LG have achieved. Not only does the Crystal look the part with the transparent keypad, it also performs brilliantly with the two touch sensitive navigation methods and a list of features that seems almost endless. Set to launch in May, the GD900 Crystal is sure to take the mobile world by storm. LG have raised the bar in both design and functionality and it will be interesting to see how the other big names (namely Samsung) compete.

HTC Touch Diamond2 available to pre-order!

April 20, 2009 at 11:32 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Having already had the privilege of putting the new HTC Touch Diamond2 through its paces early last month, HTC’s successor to the Diamond had fallen under the radar slightly. But now it’s back with a vengeance, available to pre-order at Mobiles.co.uk and expected in stock in the first week of may! Forgotten why you wanted one? Well read on and let us refresh your memory…

The HTC Touch Diamond 2 is, as the names suggests, the successor to the HTC Touch Diamond but in actual fact it’s sort of a cross between the original and the hugely successful HTC Touch HD. With a feature list that stands up against the flag ship Touch HD, the design and size are more Diamond for a much more pocket friendly device. Opting for smooth metallic lines and a matte black battery case, the Diamond2 is easily one of HTC’s prettiest offerings.

Running on Windows Mobile 6.1means the Diamond2 is now slouch as a smart phone allowing users to open and edit Microsoft Word and Excel files, browse the internet using a scaled down version of Internet Explorer and listen to music through a mobile incarnation of Windows Media player. Working in tandem with Windows Mobile is the latest version of the popular HTC TouchFLO 3D interface. TouchFLO 3D sits on top of windows mobile, giving you quick and easy access to your most used features such as media gallery, contacts and messaging. These sit on a tool bar at the bottom which users can then scroll across to get to their desired application. Fast and fluid, the Touch Diamond2 is best outing for TouchFLO 3D yet!

And before you can accuse the Touch Diamond2 of being all work and no play, HTC have ramped up the camera to 5.0 Megapixels (from 3.2 on the original) and added in Autofocus which promises to capture great photos, improved the screen size and quality, added in HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS and an all new touch sensitive zoom bar which works a treat when web browsing and looking at your photos.

Set to launch in the first week of May, pre-order yours now and be the first to get your hands on the strong contender for smart phone of the year! Click here to checkout the latest deals.

LG GC900 Viewty 2 official photos!

April 17, 2009 at 10:07 am by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

Since it was first tentatively unveiled at the Mobile World Congress event, LG have gone all quiet on the Viewty 2 front. And despite the fact that it has yet to be officially announced or even given a finished name, official images for the GC900 Viewty 2 have leaked from LG hinting that the phone is due to be officially announced imminently!

Looking like a cross between the original Viewty and the LG Secret, let’s have a recap about what we know about the Viewty 2 so far. Featuring an 8.0 Megapixel camera with a Schneider Kreuznach lens, the Viewty 2 is destined to excel in the camera department thanks to premium extras such as face recognition and an image stabiliser. Video capture is also ramped up to 720 x 480 resolution whilst the phone also features support for DivX and Xvid file formats and Dolby Mobile sound technology.

To further differentiate itself from its 8 megapixel touchscreen stablemate, the LG Renoir, the new Viewty 2 (or Viewty Smart as its being called in some circles) runs on LG’s fledgling S-Class 3D interface. Already popular from its debut outing on the recently released LG Arena, the 3D cube interface should feel right at home on the excellent 3 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen. HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity ensure the Viewty 2 will hold its own when it comes to web browsing and should use the same excellent browser as found on the Arena.

As for the rumoured stuff, the Viewty 2 will more than likely feature GPS (possibly with A-GPS support) and it’s safe to assume Geo-tagging will also feature whilst there have also been murmurings of up to 32GB of internal memory (take that Nokia N97!) and even iPhone rivaling multi-touch for the touchscreen display. Whether these features will make the final cut come June when the Viewty 2 is set to launch, we’ll have to wait and see.

With just over a month to wait, it looks like this summer could be the summer of the touchscreen. Click here to register for updates on the Viewty 2 and keep an eye on the Blog for more info as and when we get it!
