iPhone Comes Out On Top For Photo Uploading!

December 22, 2008 at 10:14 am by Dan | In Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

It seems that when it comes to uploading your precious pictures, there’s one phone that’s head and shoulders above the rest. Social photo gallery site Flickr lets users upload there photos to share with friends and family wherever they are in the world and, as of November 2008, Flickr claimed to host more than 3 billion images. Along with capturing information such as picture size and GPS location, Flickr also tracks information on the camera used. So clicking on the “most popular cameras” page on Flickr will tell you alot about what cameras and camera phones people are using to upload their snaps, but what comes out on top for camera phones? The iPhone 3G of course.

Proving that when it comes to camera phones that it’s not all about Megapixels, the Apple iPhone 3G with its 2.0 Megapixel camera beat of the likes of the Nokia N95 (5.0 Megapixel), N73 (3.2 Megapixel), N82 (5.0 Megapixel) and Sony Ericsson K800i (3.2 Megapixel). In the rankings, the i phone is the most frequently used camera phone to upload photos to Flickr and, perhaps more interestingly, is the 5th most popular camera used putting it right up there with stand alone digital cameras, dedicated to the art of photography. So why is the iPhone 3G so popular amongst Flickr users? One explanation could be down to the Apple phones celebrated user friendly interface which will let you upload photos with a few taps on the screen. But then uploading a photo from my N82 is hardly rocket science; simply click on the upload icon when looking at a photo and follow the on screen prompts.

Alternatively, maybe the host of 8.0 Megapixel camera phones will start to feature more prominently in time once they’ve found their way in to enough pockets. Personally i am of the opinion that the reason for the iPhone’s popularity with Flickr users is predominantly down to data. Any contract O2 iPhone comes with unlimited data free with the tariff as standard so users won’t worry about running up large data costs. Not necessarily the case with other phones where additional data bundles will be at the discretion and extra cost of the owner. Whatever the reason (and I’m sure some will disagree with my conclusion) it certainly gives the iPhone 3G bragging rights over its competitors. Click here to take a look at our iPhone 3G offers.

Reader input required: What do you want to know about the upcoming Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic?

December 19, 2008 at 4:59 pm by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

Nokia’s first foray into mainstream touchscreen mobile phones is due to launch early next year with the Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic expected to reach these shores in February 2009. The eagerly anticipated Nokia 5800, formerly known as the Tube, is first and foremost a music phone thanks to support for a wealth of file formats, a 3.5mm audio jack and expandable memory with support for up to 16GB via a microSD memory card. So despite its music credentials, undoubtedly the feature that has mobile fans chomping at the bit is the 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen display. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? Can it compare to the current king of the hill, the Apple iPhone 3G? And what about the integrated GPS?

Well, once again Mobiles.co.uk have managed to stay one step ahead by getting a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic in to test and give you the full story. But this isn’t some shoddy test unit or pre-release sample, this is the full fat Nokia 5800 that will be on sale in two months time. So if you’re one of the many admirers of the latest Nokia multimedia monster, please use the comments section below to ask those burning questions and then look out for our full review next week for all the answers.

The LG KS360 now in stock: Get the message!

December 18, 2008 at 4:58 pm by Jack | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones

This week the office has been graced by the appearance of the LG KS360. LG have been quite busy with its mobile phone launches of late and are becoming renowned for pairing the latest high end features with affordable prices thanks to the lack of 3G applications. Similarly to the LG cookie which brought Touchscreen to the general masses and the KC550 with its impressive camera capabilities, I feel the KS 360 will be a huge hit amongst the ever keen texting and email population with its slide out QWERTY Keyboard.

It is s a budget phone no doubt about it but it still manages to pack in a 2 megapixel camera with fixed focus, which is far better than the number would suggest especially in the right lighting, MP3 player and ringtones, FM radio, Bluetooth and a memory card slot with a potential 4Gb expansion, which is enough to store around 1,000 MP3 tracks!

LG has certainly found inspiration from the growing Smartphone market to create the KS360. This is a phone which borrows from the sliding Qwerty keyboard form factor as seen on whole range of Smartphone’s out there such as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and upcoming Nokia N97 found at the other end of the pricing spectrum, but also cuts away many of their premium features to put a messaging device in the hands of the mass market.

In addition to the touchscreen which is used for dialing, there’s a full range of “normal” buttons for navigation, calling, ending calls, etc. So if you don’t get on with touchscreens, there’s no need to worry as this phone is very user friendly. The black and blue front fascia and disjointed D-Pad is rather unique and definitely eye catching, whilst the embedded number pad keys which sit against a grey background as do the diamond-shaped arrangement of embedded cursor keys make for a very visually pleasing handset. In addition, smartly thought out soft keys in the top left and right corners of the keyboard mean navigating the various menus is a breeze whether the screen is in portrait or landscape modes. Also the dial pad is quite interesting as once called up, the screen suddenly becomes touch sensitive complete with haptic feedback. It works really well, but the screen is only touch sensitive for this one application so don’t waste time by hunting for others… like I did!

That said the LG KS360, impressive as it is, isn’t without some niggles as with everything in life, it can’t be perfect. For example, while the phone lacks 3G that is no real reason to install a basic WAP2.0 web browser and, though this isn’t a high end device, the exclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack is quite a shame as it means you can’t charge the phone and listen to music simultaneously. Connectivity appears to be via Bluetooth only, however the battery life is very good due to the light weight applications and it does have triband GSM coverage.

Also, I have to mention the KS360’s build quality. It is remarkably well put together. It feels solid in the hand but light at just 106g thanks to the shedding of those premium features. The not too recently released 3G Samsung i8510 packed to the brim with high end applications weighs in at around 140g’s and it doesn’t even have an external keyboard to worry about, just to put the size difference into perspective. In fact, the overall effect is a phone which wouldn’t look out of place alongside many of the more expensive Windows Mobile and Symbian-based smartphones on sale. The large 2.4-inch 256k colour screen is also vibrant and offers surprisingly responsive touch screen dialling when the keyboard is folded away. Of course all of these plus points would be irrelevant if the LG KS360’s key selling point was poorly implemented but this is one of the best mobile keyboards I have used short of a BlackBerry and easily sets a new bar for affordable devices.

To be honest, we were quite blown away by this little baby. We were expecting it to be a bit tacky, gimmicky and flawed due to its price range, but it’s really impressed us. The LG KS360 is an excellent phone in what is sure to become an expanding market and one which both the text addict and text amateur can enjoy with equal pleasure. Build quality is superb as previously mentioned; the screen is sharp and vivid, while the headline grabbing QWERTY keyboard is top notch. Buy the KS 360 for what it was intended and you can’t go wrong.

The LG KS360 is in stock now at Mobiles.co.uk available on O2, Orange and T-Mobile. Click here to take a look at our available offers.

iPhone takes on the handheld gaming world with Metal Gear Solid Touch!

December 17, 2008 at 5:17 pm by Dan | In Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News, Mobile Phone Games, Mobile Phones

Apple seem to have made they’re feelings on the iPhone’s gaming potential quite clear over the past couple of months with several big players in the games industry committing to the touchscreen mobile phone. And now, Apple can count another feather in their cap with the announcement from games giant Konami that they will be releasing an iPhone 3G and iPod Touch exclusive version of the massively popular Metal Gear Solid games series. The Game, expected to be available through the App store in spring next year under the imaginative title Metal Gear Solid Touch will see gamers control their character with that beautiful 3.5 inch TFT display.

Initially, the game will be released with 8 levels, with incentives such as wallpapers rewarding players who complete each level. Though anyone who has played an MGS game will agree that getting this on to the iPhone will be no easy task, what this goes to show is just what a multimedia monster the iPhone 3G really is. Having already revolutionised music mobile phones with iTunes, mobile phone web browsing and SatNav, it seems portable gaming is next in Apples sights. With versions of Pacman and Sega’s popular Super Monkey Ball series already available along with a host of games specifically designed for the App store, the i Phone is definitely flexing its gaming muscles. While this may only be of interest to the gaming half of the iPhone population, it proves what the Apple iPhone is really capable of. Without question, the iPhone 3G is much more than just a phone.

Blackberry Curve 8900 in stock now!

December 16, 2008 at 11:28 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones

This morning has seen the arrival of the latest Blackberry to the Curve family; the Blackberry Curve 8900. And not a Javelin pun in sight. The newest Curve has led a charmed existence gathering a huge following as the Blackberry Javelin before it was even officially announced. Now, the wait is over, the phone that blossomed in to the Blackberry Curve 8900 has hit the shelves at Mobiles.co.uk and is in stock and available on O2 and Orange. So for all you Blackberry fans (or should that be fanatics), you’ve had all the information you need, but for the uninitiated, read on to find out all you need to know about the latest and greatest in push email mobile phones, the Blackberry Curve 8900.

The latest Curve bears a close resemblance to its predecessors and also its stable mate the Blackberry Bold. However, look a little closer and you’ll find the 8900 Curve to be a far more handsome beast thanks to slimmer dimensions and a smooth titanium finish on the back. The Curve is also slightly lighter (109g) for good measure. Of course as to be expected from a Blackberry, the 8900 has a full QWERTY keyboard which helps to deliver the best mobile email experience available. Emails pop up on your home screen as if you were sat in your PC allowing you to open, download attachments, edit documents, attach and reply, all with ease thanks to the aforementioned keypad and trackball combination which acts like a keyboard and mouse on your home PC or Laptop. The Curve also features a truly stunning TFT display which making web browsing and watching media a dream. Seeing truly is believing when it comes to this phone, the quality and clarity of the screen will have you aimlessly browsing through menus and web pages just as an excuse. And what the Curve lacks in 3G, it makes up for in Wi-Fi connectivity so your download requirements are still catered for.

Elsewhere, the Blackberry Curve 8900 follows the recent Blackberry trend of delivering an all round user friendly experience so we also find a 3.2 Megapixel camera with a powerful flash and Autofocus, integrated GPS SatNav with Blackberry maps and A-GPS support, MP3 and multimedia player which, in tandem with the excellent display make for an incredible multimedia experience, expandable memory, Bluetooth and a wealth of calendar and organisational options. I think you’ll agree that if Blackberry had stuck with the Javelin name, it certainly would have lived up to its name and gone the distance (sorry).

The Blackberry Curve 8900 has now been released in the UK and is in stock now at Mobiles.co.uk. Free on a £35 per month tariff with 600 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited data, click here to take a look at our best offers.

Nokia N97 Demo Video

December 10, 2008 at 1:03 pm by Dan | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

If a picture paints a thousand words, then what is a video worth? Well it’s priceless to Nokia’s PR team it would seem as they look to continue to build on the buzz surrounding the Nokia N97. So, to set the excitement level to boiling point Nokia have released a short demo video showing off the skills of the first ever touch screen Nseries mobile phone, the N97. Sporting a classy iced white colour scheme and effortlessly showing off the slide out QWERTY keyboard mechanism, the most interesting aspect is, unsurprisingly, the 3.5 inch touchscreen. If the finished article is any where near as quick and responsive as this clip suggests then Nokia are surely on to a winner with the N97. But rather than waste a thousand words (or how ever many it would take!) describing it, why don’t we just show you…

Tongue wagging? Mine too. The Nokia N97 is slated for a Q1 2009 launch and i can’t wait to get my grubby mitts on one! To keep up to date on the latest developments, click here and be sure to keep an eye on the blog.

Sony Ericsson C905 Review: Picture Perfect Everytime

December 9, 2008 at 12:46 pm by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones

One of the perks here at Mobiles.co.uk is that I’m often lucky enough to get extended use of the latest and greatest in the mobile phone world. This weeks test drive is the 8.1 Megapixel maestro that is the Sony Ericsson C905 and here is my take on the phone that is taking the camera phone world by storm! With a list of features that would embarrass most stand alone digital cameras as well as that famous Cyber-shot branding; the Sony Ericsson C905 certainly talks a good talk, but is it more bark than bite? I’m not sure where I’m going with that dog analogy, so just read on to find out.

Taking a slide form factor (the first slider to bear the Cyber-shot brand), the Sony Ericsson C905 fits comfortably in your hand and has a nice weight which helps add to the impressive build quality. Made from high quality matt black plastic with a large metallic strip for the lens cover and also on both sides for the camera buttons and memory card slot, the C905 certainly looks and feels the part. On the front we find the sharp 2.4 inch TFT display which dominates the phone when it is closed. Beneath the screen we find the four way navigation key and in the centre of this the select button, two soft keys in the corners underneath the screen, call answer and end buttons and the cancel and shortcut buttons. All are on the big enough to find and use without having to take your eye off the screen. Above the screen we find the ear piece and also two more soft keys which are used when operating the camera. On the back we find the afore mentioned metallic strip which slides down to reveal the camera lens, doing so automatically opens the camera application. First impressions of the C905 are positive, the phone has a premium feel and design but above all, is very comfortable to use.

The most talked about feature of the C905 is undoubtedly the 8 Megapixel camera so let’s dive right in and check it out. With the Cybershot name, a Xenon flash and a host of features including autofocus an image stabiliser and red-eye reduction, the C905 is certainly well equipped for the job. But what about the actual image quality? Well, I can happily report that the camera lives up to the hype, producing some truly stunning images with amazing levels of clarity and detail. What’s more, the addition of the Xenon flash (as opposed to an led flash found in other camera phones) works wonders at illuminating even the darkest of scenes to deliver excellent pictures. The sample image below is in normal daylight conditions and the result is quite simply amazing with colours and textures true to life.

Sliding down the lens cover (another welcome addition which ensures the lens is clean and scratch free) automatically opens the camera and presents you with the view finder. Holding the phone in landscape orientation, along the top we find, from right to left, the capture button, a button for switching from still to video capture, a play button and lastly the zoom in/out keys. The camera interface is similar to that found on previous Sony Ericsson camera phones; the top soft key exits the camera whist the bottom opens the full options menu, each of the four way navigation keys are assigned a different shortcut for features such as flash, macro mode and timer, the top left soft key by the earpiece lets you change the shoot mode and the bottom left controls the scene settings (i.e. portrait, landscape and sport among others, All of this becomes second nature very quickly and after a couple of attempts, you’ll be navigating through the menus and customising the settings with ease! A quick note on the macro mode as i’ve just mentioned it, check out the sample image below and i’m sure you’ll agree that this is one of, maybe even the best ever found on a phone. The picture was taken just a few centremetres away from the subject and yet still remains in focus and incredibly sharp. A nice feature to show off. Video is also incorporated well, capturing at a maximum of 30 frames per second making the resulting clips fluid and natural with little distortion or interference. Clips can be recorded for as long as your memory will allow and then can be edited using Sony Ericsson’s popular VideoDJ tool.

Away from the camera, impressively the C905 features Wi-Fi connectivity alongside HSDPA mobile broadband, meaning web browsing at some truly impressive speeds is now a reality which sets the C905 as one of the first non-smart phones to support this. The web browser is capable of displaying most web sites without a hitch and does so with extra panache thanks to the excellent display. Another welcome addition is an internal GPS receiver with A-GPS support with Google maps and Way finder SatNav software which works great as a navigation tool. Google maps is best used for on foot navigation and route planning but the inclusion of Wayfinder (albeit for a limited trial period) is a great plus. Alongside this we find the usual suspects such as an MP3 player supporting a host of file formats and the popular TrackID feature and an FM radio, Bluetooth v2.0, TV output and a secondary camera for video calling.

From my hands-on with the C905, I’m was pleased to find that the C905 is much more than just a camera phone, it impresses in every department with features to rival the smartest of smartphones. The camera pushes the boundaries for what is possible in a camera phone, producing some world class images to rival the digital camera world and put itself firmly atop the camera phone pile. But thankfully Sony Ericsson have remembered to include some other high end features such as GPS and Wi-Fi to compliment the kind of features we come to expect in a new phone. And with three colours available from Mobiles.co.uk, it’s safe to say there’s a C905 to meet everyone’s tastes. Click here to view our available offers.
