MyWeb The T-Mobile G1 available to pre-order: Everything you love about the web, now in your phone!October 24, 2008 at 1:21 pm by Jack | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones
The G1 has a crisp 3.2” 65K colour HVGA display. The touch screen navigation is finger friendly and super intuitive but you can also swing it out of the way to use the full five-row QWERTY keyboard if you like. There is plenty of room to respond to emails, messages and even chat which again is made to be so simple with the use of the keyboard. It also features an MP3 player, Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate, handwriting recognition and an original little extra in a digital compass. The G1 delivers an extraordinary browsing experience. Its browser comes with a clever multi-page window pane; which allows you to surf multiple websites at the same time. Drag the page around with your finger to pan, or move from one link or textbox to another with the handy trackball positioned perfectly at the bottom of the handset. The G1 is equipped with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, which means internet speed, should always be running at full potential with the best possible connection. The G1, not only excels in the internet department but also in its revolutionary operating system. It runs on the Android platform which is an operating system for mobile devices including an operating system, middleware and key applications. Applications are written using the Java programming language and run on Dalvik, a custom virtual machine designed for embedded use, which runs on top of a Linux kernel. If you, like me find the thought of trying to write your own application a tad on the impossible side then don’t worry, the G1 has instant access to ‘Android Market’. The market is constantly updated with exciting new applications for your T-Mobile G1 whereby you can download and install your favourite software, music, games and much more. The fully customizable home screen on the G1 lets you put all the tools and gadgets acquired within your finger tips. As the phone hasn’t been released yet the amount of applications available is on the limited side however the final possibilities are endless and given the nature of people and their unique imaginations, Google feel that there will be thousands of applications cooked up within the first month of release! One that I have already found and am still a little in awe of is the G1’s “barcode scanner”, which simply scans a barcode using it’s camera and then not only gives a price list of local shops that are registered sellers of that product but also anywhere online that may sell it cheaper. It is basically a handheld comparison machine for online and offline merchants which sounds simple enough yet when you take a step back and think about it, it’s actually pretty amazing. Click on the link below if you want to see the barcode scanner being used. The video clip was made by the people over at informationweek.com who were lucky enough to get some hands on experience. Android Barcode Scanner At Work Now obviously the phone isn’t perfect, as with everything it has to have the minor weak link, its Achilles heel if you like and the G1’s is its slightly low end camera capabilities. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a respectable 3.2 megapixels but just as with the iPhone these application power houses seem to focus on so much m The T-Mobile G1 is now available on pre-order with stock available from the 1st of November. MyWeb Nokia 6600 Slide Review: Stylish SliderOctober 22, 2008 at 9:29 am by Dan | In Mobile News, Mobile Phones
For those of you who read the Blog regularly you may think I am slightly obsessed with a mobile phone’s build quality but for me first impressions are everything so a phone needs to impress me even before I switch it on. In this respect the 6600 Slide has won me over before I’ve managed to press a single button. The weight and feel of the phone is perfect. With a smooth rounded construction made from luxurious metals and with a nice rounded screen, the phone fits in your hand comfortably and slides up effortlessly. Though a small phone (in my hands at least), Nokia have still managed to keep the keypad ample enough to use The 6600 slide features a capable 3.2 Megapixel camera with Auto focus and an LED flash. The images it captures are of satisfactory quality. The 6600 copes well when capturing images with lots of contrasting colours and textures. They look good on the phones sharp TFT display and even better when blown up on a PC screen or print out. The flash is also powerful enough to illuminate low light conditions to an acceptable standard though it can’t really compare to the more powerful xenon flash found on other camera phones. You also get a good zoom and autofocus ensuring you capture the best photo possible. The camera menu layout will be familiar to anyone who has used a Nokia before. The options key allows you to customise things like image size, light sensitivity and shooting mode whil In terms of multimedia, the 6600 slide supports a wealth of different file formats including MP3, AAC and WMA, and despite the Slide’s meager 18MB of internal memory, expandable memory up to 4GB via a MicroSD slot ensure you’re never short of storage space. The Media player is simple to use with the four way navigation key taking on the main music functions such as play, skip and pause. Music quality is to a good level which nice levels of bass and good rich sound. Again, the thought that springs to mind is that Nokia have managed to cram in such a capable media player in such a small phone.
The Nokia 6600 Slide is now available on a range of different networks and tariffs. For more details, click here. MyWeb Number’s up for mobile phone bulliesOctober 17, 2008 at 9:35 am by Chris | In Charity Related, Mobile NewsCyber bullying is one of the nastiest types of bullying and it can make you feel threatened, scared and upset, especially if you don’t know who is doing it, but there are lots of things that you and your parents can do about it. In the past, when you left school at the end of the day, you could leave the bullies behind, but these days bullies think it’s clever to send anonymous text messages or to leave abusive comments on your voicemail. They might also use their mobile phones to send spoof messages to other people which make it appear that the text has come from you. To stay safe, the first thing to do is to make sure that you only give your mobile number to trusted family and friends. A lot of bullying is done by ex-friends so if they’re making nuisance calls to your number it can be a good idea to get a new SIM card. It might seem unfair to have to do this but that way you can end the problem quickly. You might think your parents or whoever cares for you will be cross if you’re having problems with your phone or on the internet, but that isn’t the case. In Bullying UK’s experience parents are not likely to take the phone away but will be concerned and want to help you to sort the problem out. It is an offence in the UK to use the phone system to cause alarm or distress. This means that if the bullies send you threatening messages or abusive ones, they are breaking the law. There’s also an offence called ‘harassment’ so if someone keeps sending you nasty texts they could be breaking that law too. If there are lots of silent calls that can be harassment too. There’s also something called happy slapping which is an assault filmed on a mobile phone and then sent to other people’s phones or posted on the internet. It isn’t difficult for the police to trace the people behind these offences but they need your help to do it. Everything a bully does on their mobile phone or uploads to the internet has their digital fingerprints all over it. Even if they have withheld their phone number! The first thing your parents or carer need to do is to look at the messages so save them and don’t delete them. Sometimes they might be embarassing, the sender might say that you are gay, or mention rumours of things which are not true, perhaps that you’ve done something really wrong that you wouldn’t want anyone else to know about. Often they make things up based on secrets you’ve told them in the past. It’s tempting to reply to messages and if you get angry that can lead to a flame war. Bullies enjoy winding you up so don’t give them the satisfaction of showing you are upset or losing your temper. Show the texts or voicemails to your parents or carer and tell them a bit about what’s been going on. If the calls are very unpleasant then they need to take the phone to the police station and make a complaint. The police can contact your mobile phone company to get a list of the numbers that have called your phone. You may not know who they are but they’re not as anonymous as they thought they were! Bullying UK has had complaints about spoof abusive texts which appear to have been sent from a particular mobile phone number when they have been sent through internet websites and not from a mobile phone. If you are accused of sending a message when you know you haven’t done so then the police can check with your mobile phone provider to clear your name. This is very rare but unfortunately it does happen. In most cases people who make abusive calls are warned off and that does the trick. If they’re stupid enough to keep doing it then they may be cautioned if they admit an offence or in serious cases of happy slapping assault they could end up in court. Most mobile phone operators will let you block calls from withheld numbers or from numbers you don’t want to call you so if you’re starting to have trouble phone customer services and ask their advice about whether there is anything you can do to stop the problem getting worse. Bullying by mobile or the internet is often part of a bigger picture so if you’re upset by this you don’t have to put up with it on your own. There is lots of practical advice and help for you and your parents or carer on the Bullying UK website at www.bullying.co.uk. There’s also advice for schools and youth organisations. MyWeb LG KC910 Review: The first touch screen 8 Megapixel Camera Phone!October 15, 2008 at 4:33 pm by Jack | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile PhonesThe latest in an increasing number of 8 megapixel camera phones to be hitting the shelves is the LG KC910 (also known as the Renoir), which here at Mobiles.co.uk we were lucky enough to get a little sneak peak of before it goes on sale later this month.
Now personally (and if you are an avid reader of the blog you will know that I have said this before) I’m not a huge fan of touch screens however I was given the chance to test drive this 8 megapixel giant so I thought I should give it a fair trial and on first impression I have to admit that I was rather impressed with the look and build of it. Make no doubt about it the phone is rather big however; it is also quite light and fits nicely in the palm of your hand whilst you navigate with the other. I loved the big bright screen and as you can see from the image above, the picture quality is amazing. The four icons at the bottom of the touch screen take you to different areas of the phone. Starting from the left there is call history, phone book, messaging and main menu whereby you can find your way through to anything else i.e. music, settings, camera etc. One thing I didn’t immediately get however, actually that’s a lie, I still don’t get is the desktop layout. Not that it’s a huge deal, if a deal at all, I just couldn’t seem to get my head around the applications which you find on the front. As you can just see from the image you get a clock face for time which is pretty standard but what you cant see is below you also get a post it note for little reminders so you have to scroll up and down to find different things and even though they can be moved they cannot be put within viewing range of each other?? And if you touch that blue hook on the right of the screen a blue tray appears with another clock on it that just wobbles about. The phone to be fair didn’t come with a manual so I couldn’t check up on it however I’m sure it holds some magical use that just goes over my head. My biggest issue with touch screen mobile phones is that I’ve always thought that my fingers are too big to be prodding around on the screen, before this, the thought of texting on one was actually quite daunting and when there was no stylus to be found I only thought the worst, however I honestly could not fault it after giving it a worthy series of tests. Once I started to play around with the phone, nothing could be easier. The menu’s are set out in such a way that you cannot confuse one thing with the other, and they are large enough for anyone’s fingers, therefore navigating my way round the phone was a breeze, even the camera features which included large easy to use icons, drop down menu’s and my personal favourite, a sliding image gallery whereby if you put your finger on the screen and just slide to either the left or right it will take you to the next or previous image/video. Right, now for the key attraction and selling point for the KC910, it’s 8 megapixel camera which include automatic and manual focus, image stabiliser and a range of face detection features which did come in use when I was outside taking a few example photos as it was quite a windy day but still it managed to capture images instantly with perfect clarity. It is also equipped with a Xenon flash which is much brighter than the standard LED flash found on most phones and on top of that, the KC910 uses its built-in GPS to geo-tag photographs automatically. The KC910 also excels in the video department recording at 30 frames per second and slow motion 120 fps QVGA videos are also available. Here are some examples of the KC910’s full potential. I couldn’t believe how much detail the phone manages to squeeze into the image. I recently took the slightly less powerful 5 megapixel KC550 for a spin and that impressed me, however I’ve seen nothing to date that can rival this photo capturing monster. Granted it was a bright day so everything was in the phones favour but the contrast in colours are amazing, in particular the red weird looking things to the right, who’s name still elude me where I put the camera right up close to judge how the camera coped with close up images and I think it’s safe to say it doesn’t struggle too much.
Below I have made use of the cameras zoom function. To the left is a close up of the image directly above at about 50% and yet the image does not falter for colour or clarity in the slightest, if anything it captures the light even better. To the right is a close up of the red bulb at 100% and again even though the background is slightly less noticeable the main ingredient to the photo is as sharp as ever. If anything this phone has just depressed me a little bit as when I gave it back I had to return to my original lowly 3.2 megapixel state, in the knowledge that phones such as the KC910 are soon to be among us.
The LG, as mentioned above offers a full touch screen experience unlike any other 8 megapixel in the market however unlike the Samsung i8510 it only runs on a flash user interface, therefore unable to increase its functionality with the addition of third party software offered by the Symbian Operating System which the fore mentioned i8510 possess. On the brighter side it does have built-in GPS receiver including GPS functions, TV out functionality, Java MIDP 2.0, WAP and WI-FI connections, Bluetooth 2.0 so you can listen to music via a Bluetooth headset (something I wanted to try but never got the chance to) and to top it all off it has HSDPA 7.2 mbps internet capabilities for ultra fast browsing and downloading. So to sum up, as far as Touchscreens go, I genuinely can’t find a big enough fault to make me not want to rush out and buy this phone when it launches later this month. The LG KC910 is due for release around late October so if I’ve caught your interest, click here and we’ll keep you updated with a specific date and pre order instructions.
