Nokia announce the 8800 Carbon ArteAugust 31, 2008 at 9:06 pm by Nathaniel | In Mobile News, Coming Soon HandsetsA new addition to the premium 8800 Series has been announced by Nokia this week; the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte. Carbon fibre, Titanium, Stainless steel and polished glass have been crafted to compose a third Arte in the collection. Motivated by architecture, aerospace and sports cars, the first class minded engineers of Nokia have used these materials to reflect a modern feel through the unique tones, textures and sculpted shapes that carbon fiber and titanium deliver. The 8800 Carbon has proven consistent with its seamless surface and substantial weight. Functionality wise it has succeeded it’s predecessors with an upgraded 4GB Flash memory and a vastly improved resistence to finger prints. An impressive feature adopted from the previous Arte is the turn-to-mute silencing mechanism which lets users silence incoming calls by turning the mobile phone over on to its face. Nokia also include this feature in the upcoming Nokia 6600 Slide which benefits from a similarly luxurious design and build quality (though you can expect that to be down right more reasonable in terms of price!) Organic Wallpapers that transform throughout the day and the unique tap for time feature are combined into an improved striking OLED display. A microUSB connecter and 3.2 megapixel camera complete the feature list. Expected to launch in the UK in early October, click here to keep updated on the Carbon Arte and be the first to know when it launches. MyWeb HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson mobile phones win EISA awardsAugust 24, 2008 at 7:42 am by Jack | In Mobile NewsThree mobile phones walked away with a title at the 2008 annual European Imaging and Sound Association awards as being voted the best in their selected fields. The Walkman-series flagship Sony Ericsson W980, the multimedia powerhouse Samsung G810 and the HTC Touch Diamond were the deserved and maybe lucky winners in one particular case. European Music Phone 2008-2009
Brand - Sony Ericsson Model - W980i The Sony Ericsson W980i took the trophy for number one music phone by some margin and in my opinion quite rightly so. Thanks to it’s sleek and stylish black design, the amazing number of supported audio formats and overall high level of functionality and performance it came head and shoulders over the rest of the competition. It is simply the latest triumph in the long line of successful Sony Walkman-series handsets. Quick Description The W980i is loaded with 8 GB of internal memory, a 3.2 Megapixel camera which is very impressive for a music based phone, an FM tuner, Bluetooth stereo, and a music player that operates even with the phone flip-lid closed. One smart innovation is the European Smart Phone 2008-2009 Brand - HTC Model - Touch Diamond The HTC Touch Diamond beat off tough competition from the likes of Sony Ericsson’s G900 and Samsungs new ‘Omnia’ to land the title of smart phone of the year. HTC have taken a great leap forward in touch screen innovation with the release of the Touch Diamond and the ground breaking 3D touch interface called TouchFLO 3D which provides animated access to contacts, messaging photos and music. Quick Description
European Photo Phone 2008-2009
Brand - Samsung Model - SGH-G810 Taking gold in the camera phone category this year was maybe surprisingly the Samsung G810. There is no doubt it is a top phone however few have even heard of this model so I think I’m going to have to disagree with the nice people of EISA as I have my own favourite in this department. Yes it has a 5 megapixel camera, 3x optical zoom, xenon flash and numerous camera-style functions however so do many other 5 megapixel cameras in recent times. My personal favourites for sheer camera quality are the 8GB Nokia N95 and also due for release on august 29th exclusively to Mobiles.co.uk is Samsung’s imaging powerhouse, the Samsung i8510 which boasts an 8 megapixel camera!! Quick Description One of the highlight features of the multi-talented Nokia N95 smartphone is its 5-megapixel camera. To optimise the quality of photographs, Nokia has equipped the N95 8GB with top of the range The N95’s shooting ability is enhanced too by its autofocus system, macro shooting, and built in flash with red-eye reduction, to mention a few of an impressive list of helpful little features. The Nokia N95 8GB’s video shooting capabilities aren’t too shabby either; it can capture MPEG-4 video in VGA quality at 30 frames per second, delivering images that are among the best quality yet produced by a mobile phone. MyWeb Wireless and Mobile Technology - For Better or Worse?August 19, 2008 at 11:49 am by Jack | In Mobile NewsAs mobile phones and wireless technology rapidly make advances over our social and working lives, we at Mobiles.co.uk pose the question, has this altered people’s lives for the better or worse? In 2006, Mobile life was established and over 16,500 people were questioned on the four major areas of their lives; Family, relationship, society and work. Following vast advances and breakthroughs in technology Carphone Warehouse decided this year it was time to review employees as well as the general public. Two thousand CPW employees answered questions set by the London School of Economics on the impact new wireless technology and mobiles phones have made on their everyday lives. The survey was conducted in two parts; by first questioning employees of the Carphone Warehouse and then comparing their answers to those from the general public in order to see if there was a distinct difference between people working with the technology on a regular basis and those who don’t. As technology advances it has become apparent that wireless is the way forward. Most of us find it very important that we are kept in the know 24/7 wherever we are and the only way we are able to do that is mobile devices with access to the net. This has led to a big push for Wi-Fi to be included in both laptops and mobiles. Similarly the new HSDPA phones such as the Samsung Tocco and Nokia N95 8GB with increased browsing and download speeds have recently come onto the market to satisfy consumer demand. The results from the survey showed that the following were perceived to be the most significant benefits of wireless technology within the house: 1. Allows you to access the internet via your laptop anywhere in the house. So the most popular benefit of wireless technology is the obvious one – it lets you go online from anywhere in the home. Many people also felt going wireless meant the house looks tidier and a smaller but still significant number of respondents said they simply liked using the latest technology on offer. Another insight, from the answers to ‘which of the following have you done online using a mobile phone?’, shows how many of those high-spec features we are actually using:
CPW employees are somewhat more welcoming when it comes to the internet, with a huge 41% having sent an email and obtained latest news via their mobiles in comparison to the UK average of 17% and 14% respectively. This was probably not a surprise given that CPW staff handle the latest phones day in day out. In the past, some people have raised concerns that this time spent online will eventually undermine our ability to form face to face relationships and that people will retreat into a virtual world however I believe this to be the opposite… with all the time saved via our mobile devices surely we have more free time? And with the ability of wireless devices at our fingertips, enabling us to work outside our home or office, does that not put us in a more sociable position? In any case I am sure you are as excited as me to find out what the future holds for wireless technology and what boundaries we may push next. MyWeb Motorola releases three new ROKR mobile phones - the EM25, EM28 and EM30August 18, 2008 at 7:43 am by Jack | In Mobile News, Coming Soon HandsetsMotorola has expanded its ROKR portfolio with the introduction of three new music-orientated mobile phones. The ROKR series is currently led by the Motorola E8 and all three devices seem to borrow something from its design. The new handsets are Motorola EM25, EM28 and EM30. Each of the phones have been modified slightly to attract a different kind of customer. The EM30 is a standard bar shape that has been equipped with Motorola’s ModeShift technology; the EM28, a flip phone with “sonic features” and finally the EM25, a slider with FM radio sharing capabilities.
The MotoROKR EM30 is further equipped with a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks support, Motorola CrystalTalk technology, which I can say from personal experience does improve call quality and a 2 megapixel camera without auto focus. A microSD memory card slot is also on board capable of supporting cards with capacities of up to 8GB. Unfortunately there’s no UMTS support but that’s expected bearing in mind the suggested low price point.
The Motorola EM28 ROKR also packs quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support with CrystalTalk, a 1.3 megapixel camera, which may be the one slightly disappointing feature for a modern mobile phone and a 1.8-inch 65K colour TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. In terms of music the ROKR EM28 allows users to control their music using touch-sensitive keys that appear “only when they’re needed”. An external screen on the front of the phone shows the name of the artist and song whilst the track is playing. The EM28 also boasts a 3D sound effect for pretend surround-sound and an audio equaliser with 11 equaliser pre-set music genres, including rock, reggae and pop. Users can also boost the bass up to nine decibels. Overall this is a high performing music phone with many pleasing little features. Depending on your taste in design the EM28 maybe the best in terms of performance and sound quality. And finally, the Motorola EM25 ROKR, with dedicated music key. It has dual-band GSM/GPRS support with CrystalTalk, one-touch access to the music player, stereo Bluetooth, a standard 3.5mm audio jack, a microSD memory card slot (up to 2GB), and 1.3 megapixel camera. The slider phone also offers the new FMShare feature found on the other two in the collection. The EM25 offers a genuine music-player experience, including immediate access to your stored music library or built-in FM radio with Radio Data System (RDS) technology. Also similar to Sony Ericsson’s already established TrackID, Motorola have introduced SONGID which basically does exactly the same thing helping to identify songs and artists easily. Indeed they may have taken the idea from Sony however that doesn’t take away the fact that it is a very useful feature for those irritating times when a song is driving you crazy, playing over and over in your head and you just can’t think what it’s called. The ROKR EM30 is expected to launch first in Taiwan then in other markets throughout the year, while ROKR EM28 and ROKR EM25 will be available much sooner in Europe. Personally I like all the small features that differentiate the three but my favourite would have to be the EM30 purely on the design and the mood changing keypad plus for a music phone the camera is slightly better than its competitors which is an added bonus. MyWeb On your marks, get set, Tocco: Samsung’s Olympic sponsored mobile phone gets the Gold!August 17, 2008 at 9:55 am by Dan | In Mobile News
GO! First off; the design. The Tocco is a lot more pleasing on the eye and in the hand than I had anticipated. The phone is given a stylish brushed metal finish on the back whilst the front is dominated by the touchscreen. The minimalist design continues with three rather unassuming face buttons and the Samsung logo at the bottom and the earpiece at the top. Also included in the box is a leather flip case that clips on in place of the battery cover, protecting the screen and offering a nice leather finish. First impressions are everything and, for me at least, the Tocco had already won me over. The build quality and stylish design is a winning formula. Straight away the Tocco is quick out of the blocks! The Tocco runs on Samsung’s new Touchwiz user interface featuring vibrating feedback so you’re not left guessing if you’ve actually pressed a button or not. It has to be said it does work extremely well as you can navigate through menus effortlessly with the flick of a finger. The use of Widgets is also a nice touch; a menu bar running vertically down the side of the screen features miniaturized menu icons which you can then drag and drop on to the home screen populating it like you would a pc desktop. So for instance, when playing music, you can have the music player running in the background which is then easily accessed when you need. First hurdle cleared! The Tocco features an impressive 5.0 Megapixel camera with a wealth of features that wouldn’t look out of place on a standalone digital camera; flash, wide dynamic range, face detection, anti-shake, all present and all help Don’t be fooled into thinking the Tocco is a one trick horse though, its compact size hides a real wallop! HSDPA connectivity makes for super fast downloads and browsing. The web browser is particularly impressive with a feature called Smart fit which So with the national anthem echoing in our ears and the Tocco perched proudly atop the podium, its safe to say Samsung have delivered. The combination of great design, build quality and high-spec features make the Tocco easy to get behind in a race against any current or future Touch Screen mobile phones. Plus with a range of different colours available (currently Pink and Brown), you really are spoilt for choice!
