Sony Ericsson C702 Cybershot Camera Phone – Never miss a shot

May 29, 2008 at 10:54 am by Jay | In Mobile News, Coming Soon Handsets

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

The Sony Ericsson C702 is a Cybershot phone and the features are heavily weighted in the camera department, making this camera phone more than worthy of carrying the Cybershot name.

Sony Ericsson C702 CybershotThe C702 sports a very high quality 3.2 megapixel camera, optimised for one-handed use so you will never miss a shot again. The camera uses autofocus technology, and also has support for face detection. If there is a face in the picture the phone will automatically recognise this and focus in. As well as this the phone is composed with steady grip materials and is also splash and dust resistant, which should appeal to the outdoor adventurer in us all.

Alongside this, the Sony Ericsson C702 has integrated GPS support, meaning you can use the C702 as the perfect Geotagging device. Rough and ready to use in all conditions outdoors this Sony phone can record your location details via GPS when you take a picture. Many of the online sharing sites such as Flickr and Picasa will display the information alongside the picture, so you can show friends and families where you are when a picture is taken. Should they wish, and if they have a compatible handset, they can store the location in their phone and navigate their way to that location at their leisure.

The Sony C702 has support for mobile blogging and vlogging, so you don’t even need to be near a PC to upload your images. With built in HSDPA Mobile Broadband support you can upload photos and videos quickly and simply to your own online blog. With HSDPA support you can also utilise the Sony Ericsson C702 for accessing the internet and your email on the move. The c702 has a built in Netfront web browser, or if you prefer you can download and install the excellent Opera Mini.

Another way of using the handset away from imaging is as a mobile satellite navigation device. Thanks to the GPS support, by using Google maps you can navigate your way to anywhere you wish to go. Google Maps has over 20 million points of interest detailed world wide, so wherever you are you will always find what you need and how to get there.

Memory storage is more than adequate on the phone, with 160MB of internal memory and support for Sony M2 memory cards. Lastly, one of the best applications to ever appear on a mobile phone is also included on the C702 and deserves a mention. I am of course talking about the excellent TrackID. With TrackID you can record snippets of songs heard from the radio, stereo, on the internet, and upload that to the web. Within seconds details of that song are delivered in return to your phone. The information will generally include song name, artist and album details, plus an option to buy the song or download as a ringtone.

The Sony Ericsson C702 is due soon. If you wish to register your interest in the handset, then click here and enter your details as required. We will email you when we have confirmed details on a release date.

17% of Brits Would Shop From Their Mobile Phones

May 28, 2008 at 10:38 am by Jay | In Mobile News

mobile internet shoppingIn a recent study of 1,000 mobile users, 17% of those questioned said they would be likely to take up shopping from their mobile phones.

The survey was carried out by Lightspeed Research, and they found that the most popular items people would consider buying were DVD’s and CD’s, with 73%, followed by Books and Travel, which both came in at 55%.

Men were the most likely to use their phones for buying online, with 22%, whilst only 12% of women would consider shopping from their phone. I guess popping from website to website on the mobile to buy the first item they saw is not as appealing as popping from shop to shop, just to buy from the first shop they visited!

The figures were higher than those from the same survey conducted in France, where only 9% said they would shop from their phone, but Germany fared much better, with 25%.

Other items people would buy from their phone were flowers, at 48%, but clothes, food and toiletries were the least popular options. Lightspeed Research CEO for Europe, David Day, said:

‘This research suggests that the mobile phone could become a viable way for retailers to reach their customers.

‘The 24/7 nature of the mobile phone, a device that many people have with them all the time, and the increase in Internet-ready phones offers a real opportunity for retailers to match their offer to the products and services customers may want to buy in this way.’

In many ways, this change in shopping habit is influenced by the same technological advances that boosted internet shopping generally. It was the introduction of home broadband that made online shopping the success it is today. Similar speed improvements with mobile broadband in phones such as the Samsung U900 Soul, Nokia N95 and LG Secret is certainly playing its part in making mobile shopping quicker and more convenient.

Nokia 6600 Fold smooth compact clamshell phone

May 27, 2008 at 10:47 am by Jay | In Mobile News, Coming Soon Handsets

Nokia 6600 FoldThe smooth Nokia 6600 Fold opens with one touch of a button, to reveal a bright clear 16 million colour QVGA display. The seamless design of the 6600 Fold has the signature ’smooth back’ look when open and remains subtle and compact when closed.

The high gloss surface of the handset springs to life when tapped twice to wake up the outer display, revealing the time, incoming messages and missed calls. A double tap on the phone also snoozes the alarm, silences alerts and rejects calls.

The Nokia 6600 is a 3G mobile and includes a 2.0 megapixel camera with double LED flash. This feature allows the LED light to be used when video recording in low light. Another feature of the 6600 is the built in music player. The player supports multiple audio formats, including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA. With support for Bluetooth 2.0 you will be able to listen to your music on the move, without wires, using a stereo Bluetooth headset. There is also an FM stereo radio for those times when your music collection is just not enough.

The 6600 Fold supports Nokia Maps, which if used in conjunction with a GPS Bluetooth dongle turns your handset into a mobile Sat Nav device. This feature packed phone from Nokia covers all the main areas you want in a mobile phone; mobile navigation, mobile photography and mobile music.

UK Leads the Way in Mobile Email

May 23, 2008 at 1:45 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

Opera have released a report, titled ‘State of the Mobile Web‘ for the first quarter of 2008. The report has highlighted some very interesting data.

Since 1998 Opera have been working to offer a decent web browsing experience on the mobile phone. Over that time they have developed what has become the most popular web browser for mobile handsets, Opera Mini. With the increase in usage of QVGA screens on mobile phones, combined with the excellent Opera Mini web browser, surfing the internet on a mobile phone is no longer hard work. Many handsets now work on 3G data speeds with HSDPA Mobile Broadband becoming more increasingly available. This, combined with how Opera Mini, transcodes web pages to increase data transfer speeds, offers mobile users access to full websites with enhanced browsing experience as opposed to having to rely on cut down WAP or .mobi sites.

users_cumulative.jpgOpera Mini has been downloaded over 44 million times since its worldwide launch in 2006. In March alone, almost 12 million people used Opera Mini to surf the net, with the number of people downloading and using Opera Mini increasing by 26% just in the last quarter, compared to the previous quarter in 2007.

views_monthly-pages-transcoded-custom.jpgPage requests to the net via OM are processed through a secured server. The servers are located in several countries around the world to help improve throughput and to make sure that web pages are delivered lightning quick, by not forcing the phone to process the page information. More than 2.4 billion web pages were processed through the OM servers in March alone. In total, the number of pages viewed through Opera Mini in the last quarter grew by an astonishing 57%, over the figures for the last quarter in 2007. The average number of pages viewed by each user in March were 202.

data_monthly-consumed.jpgAs mobile web browsing becomes ever more popular, of course there is an increase in the amount of data transferred, and network mobile tariffs that offer an inclusive amount of browsing data are becoming as popular, and just as important, as tariffs with inclusive voice minutes and text messages. In the month of March, Opera Mini users generated more than 33 million MegaBytes of data, for mobile network operators worldwide. The total compared to the last quarter showed a growth of almost 88%.

As users become more comfortable browsing the net from their phone, they are looking more and more for full internet sites, as opposed to ‘made for mobile’ sites. 77% of all traffic goes to full websites, with just 23% going to mobile specific sites. This matches Opera’s OneWeb idea, where a user will access the same sites on a PC or on a mobile phone. The most popular sites accessed on a mobile phone continue to be Social Networking sites, which accounts for almost 40% of worldwide traffic, with some countries having almost 60% of their web traffic going to sites like Facebook and Myspace.

In the UK, the most popular sites are mobile email access sites, with 11% of the total web traffic going to sites such as Yahoo Mail and Google’s Gmail. In the top ten sites accessed, the large majority were social networking sites, with Facebook leading the way. Here is the top ten in full:

1. www.Facebook.com
2. www.google.co.uk
3. www.live.com
4. www.bebo.com
5. www.mocospace.com
6. news.bbc.co.uk
7. uk.yahoo.com
8. www.itsmy.com
9. www.faceparty.com
10. www.ebay.co.uk

You can download the Opera Mini web browser from here.

The Sony Ericsson C902 - A Phone Good Enough for James Bond

May 22, 2008 at 1:22 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

Sony Ericsson C902Sometimes a mobile phone will come to market that is packed with features and the Sony Ericsson C902 is just such a handset. The C902 is the latest in the popular Sony Ericsson Cybershot range, and to justify the handset Sony have made some welcome improvements in the camera technology and with the phone in general.

The C902 sports a cracking 5.0 megapixel camera, with autofocus, face detection and an image stabliser as standard. To access the camera you give the end a tug and the covered lens is exposed. You can see this in the video clip below. The opening mechanism reminds me of the 1970’s spy TV programs, the camera is opened in a similar way to the small spy cameras they used to use. The handset has a flash, which Sony Ericsson are calling simply Photo Flash. It doesn’t carry the Xenon name but SE claim it is as good as a Xenon flash. The light can also be used when recording video clips in low light, which is a nice touch.

The Best Pic option is available on the handset, which when activated takes 9 pictures in very quick succession on the phone, with one press of the camera key. From the 9, you can view and select your favourite pic and delete the rest. Best Pic is ideal if you find that subjects in your photos tend to close their eyes or open their mouths just as you are about to take their picture!

Viewing the pictures on the phone is simply and easily done, thanks to the built in accelerometer. When viewing your pictures in portrait mode simply rotate the handset by 90 degrees to view automatically in landscape mode. Or you can simply upload them to your own online blog, thanks to the mobile’s built in support for blogging and video blogging, or vlogging if you prefer. There is even software built in to the phone that allows you to create a slide show, on the handset, complete with transitions and a backing soundtrack.

Away from the top range imaging capabilities the Sony Ericsson C902 is a serious handset for communication and web access on the move. Supporting HSDPA mobile broadband for super fast download speeds, the Sony C902 also has a bright, clear TFT QVGA screen, which presents websites in the sharpest clarity. The handset has a built in Netfront web browser, but you can also download and install the excellent Opera Mini web browser.

Memory capacity is abundant, with a solid 160MB of internal memory, plus the option to expand with the addition of Sony M2 memory cards.

If you want to register your interest in the C902, please click here and enter your details as required. Once we have information on a release date we will email you and let you know.

Who Calls Me - how to avoid cold calls on your mobile phone

May 20, 2008 at 5:38 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

screenshot0020.jpgIf you’ve never had a call on your mobile that hangs up as soon as you answer, then you can count yourself very lucky. Sometimes the call is made automatically by machines, the mobile number is rung and when you answer the machine will hang up.

This information is logged and passed on to companies who will try and sell you something over the phone. The machine will check if the number is active, and register whether the call is answered or if it rings out to answer phone. All this is to remove ‘dead numbers’ from the cold calling company’s call list.

Sometimes the call is from a withheld or private number, but other times a number will be displayed and captured on your mobile phone’s call log. If this has happened to you and you want to know who the number belongs to before you call them back, then WhoCallsMe is the place to go.

Whocallsme.com is a user supplied database of phone numbers. By going to the website and searching for the number you have in your call log, you can find out if it is a scam or a call from a genuine company. If the number you are checking isn’t registered then you can start your own thread and very soon a database is created for that number, as others who have also been called add their information to the thread. A simple idea, that works very well.

As for dealing with cold calls on your mobile phone, the following tips may be of use:

1. If you get a call from a withheld or private number, let the call ring out to answerphone. If the call is important, they will leave a message.
2. If you receive a call from a number you do not recognise, or one that is not stored in your mobile phone, again let it run to answerphone and see if you are left a message.
3. If you are plagued by cold calls, you can apply to have your number removed from ALL company databases, by contacting the Telephone Preference Service. Their number is 0845 070 0707 and their web address is www.tpsonline.org.uk Note, this does remove you from ALL directories, both the scammers and legitimate companies.
4. If you have a smartphone, you can buy software which can be set up to allow only certain numbers to call you, and which can block all unknown and withheld numbers from even getting through to you. A selection of call barring software can be found at our mobile phone software shop. Just click here and run a search for black list.

HTC Touch Diamond - an iPhone-inspired gem

May 16, 2008 at 4:53 pm by Jay | In Mobile News, Coming Soon Handsets

HTC touch diamondHTC have announced the launch of their latest handset, the Touch Diamond. One of the stand out features for this mobile phone is the new HTC Touch interface, called Touchflo 3D. Touchflo 3D provides animated access to contacts, messaging, email, photos, music weather and more.

The Touch Diamond is loaded with many top end features and is well made, feeling very comfortable in the hand. Support for HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps is included along with HSUPA technology, allowing for high speed upload and downloads. It offers an excellent web browsing experience, with a new customised mobile web browser, which enables easy viewing and simple navigation of websites. Users can easily zoom and pan across websites one handed and automatically view specially created content, optimised to fit the display. With the built in accelerometer websites can be viewed automatically in landscape mode simply by rotating the phone.

The HTC Diamond has a large 2.8 inch screen, which supports VGA resolution, that is 640 x 480 pixels, enabling you to see photos taken in near print quality on the screen. The handset has a built in 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a secondary camera for making video calls.

The Diamond also includes a built in GPS chip with added support for A-GPS, which enables a faster lock on your location. Used with Sat Nav software this turns your handset into a mobile satellite navigation device.

The phone offers a multitude of connection options, as well as the afore-mentioned HSDPA and HSUPA the Diamond supports WiFi and also Bluetooth 2.0. Bluetooth 2.0 support will allow you to listen to music files from your device or the built-in stereo FM radio wirelessly with a stereo Bluetooth headset.

The HTC Touch Diamond operates on the Windows Mobile system version 6.1. This latest version of Windows Mobile offers an increased performance standard to previous versions, including better power management, which in turn equates to a better battery standby performance time. User memory available on the handset is an impressive 4GB, unfortunately this cannot be expanded as there is no card slot available. The handset weighs in at just 110g and is only 11.5mm thick. We expect a launch of the HTC Touch Diamond on UK networks sometime in June and we’ll update this information as soon as we get further news or you can register here to be kept updated by email.

Support the Burma Appeal with a Text Message

May 15, 2008 at 4:37 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

text-message.jpgThe UK mobile phone networks have set up a short code so that customers can send a donation to the Burma appeal, supporting relief work in the disaster area.

To make a donation of £1.50 simply text the word “DONATE” to 83696, and the money will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee. Texts cost 10p each. There is no limit on how many times you can text the short code number.

The funds will be used to help the hundreds of thousands of victims of Cyclone Nargis, which devastated coastal areas of Burma on May 2. Up to 100,000 people are feared to have died in the disaster, and the survivors are at risk of disease from a lack of food and clean water.
