February 29, 2008 at 4:43 pm by Hannah | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

sony ericsson k660iSony Ericsson have announced that 44% of 16-24 year olds have accessed the internet using their mobile phone within the past 6 months, with around 12 minutes being spent on the internet each day.

This research was done by an independent company nVision, who noticed that around 26% of young people now own a 3G phone; this figure has risen by over 12 per cent in the past two years. The mobile internet is now evolving so rapidly that you can now use any social networking site such as YouTube or Facebook wherever you want.

With this research in mind, Sony Ericsson launched the K660i, a ‘Web for Youth’ phone that comes in two colours lime on white and wine on black. The phone lets you view internet pages horizontally, giving a much improved internet experience.

The phone combines all you might need to stay in constant contact with your friends, wherever and whenever you want. Combining HSDPA with illuminated shortcut keys, and zoom functions using the internet on the K660i is as easy as using your computer at home. The phones main navigation key serves as a magnetic mouse pointer when it’s in web mode, and it even indicates which parts of the page you are viewing are clickable.

Sony Ericsson Update Handset Names

February 26, 2008 at 4:03 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

Sony Ericsson handset names

If you’ve ever wondered the reason why manufacturers give their mobile phones such seemingly random letters and numbers as model names, then this piece of information from the unofficial Sony Ericsson blog is going to be of interest. It seems that Sony Ericsson are going to be changing the naming system of their new handset range for all new handsets released during this year. From the graphic you can see that the majority of SE phones are going to be prefixed with either G, C, S or W. Each letter indicates a specific target market. For example, G indicates generation web. All handsets with the G prefix will focus on mobile web access, and will most likely work on the Symbian UIQ operating system. C will indicate a Cybershot phone, and the focus of these handsets are the superior imaging capabilities. S stands for snapshot, and will most likely be aimed at the low to mid tier of the market, with prepay and emerging markets key. And finally, W will stand for Walkman and will indicate music focused handsets.

The numbering also has a bearing on the status of the handset. The first number will indicate the level of features on the handset, operating from 9 being the highest downwards to low spec 1 handsets. The middle number indicates the release of the handset, starting from zero and with each successor handset being numbered 1, 2, 3 etc. Finally the last number will indicate the style of handset, 0,1 and 2 being candybar, 3 and 5 being slider, 6, 7 and 8 being clamshell and 9 indicating anything else.

Using that information you will always know that a C805 would be a slide style high end cybershot phone whilst a w518 would be a clamshell low to mid range music phone, a successor to the w508.

Those who have an eye for detail will have noticed that the ‘i’ has been dropped from the new product names. Some product ranges will be kept, such as the P Series high end smartphones, and there will also be an R range of phones ,that will focus music around the radio capabilities of the phone.

Sony Ericsson MPS 60 mobile phone speakers

February 25, 2008 at 9:07 pm by Jay | In Mobile Phone Accessories

Following on from our look at the Nokia MD-4 speakers, we now look at the Sony Ericsson MPS-60.

These speakers have been around for a while, and offer a great way of sharing your music with friends. Compatible with all Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, the MPS-60 offer an acceptable sound quality for the size of speaker.

Sony Ericsson MPS 60 speakers

The setup and operation is simply plug n play, the speakers will fit onto the connector port of any Sony Ericsson handset, such as the excellent W960i, and an advantage is they do not need their own power source, as they draw power from the phone. Due to the size of the speaker connector, it is not possible to have a power source connected to the phone at the same time, even using the Sony Ericsson pass-through chargers. However if you are running the phone in Walkman only mode, you can get up to 30 hours playback, so this isn’t always an issue.

All volume control of the speakers is done via the main menu on the handset, when the Walkman player is active.

The speakers themselves are connected to the adaptor by orange speaker wire. They come complete in a protective casing, where the speakers can be stored when not in use.

Current you can get Free MPS-60 speakers with any new mobile phone from Mobiles.co.uk.

Nokia N82 Black

February 22, 2008 at 9:09 pm by Jay | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

Nokia N82 in blackThe Nokia N82 has proved to be one of the most popular handsets released by Nokia in the NSeries range in the last couple of years. Regularly topping sales charts the N82 has proven that top end mobile phones will sell to the masses.

For many years, the term smartphone would put people of buying a handset, when all they really needed from a phone was to make calls and send texts. Nowadays, mobile usage has changed, and people want a phone that will play music, take good pictures, connect to the web, send and receive email, work as a mobile SatNav unit and more… the Nokia N82 is just such a mobile phone.

Nokia, usually ahead of the game, started to drop the smartphone term from their products, instead preferring to call them multimedia computers. Hardly a catch-on term, but it did draw the attention away from ‘smartphone’ and more into the media rich features offered by the NSeries range.

Now Nokia have announced that they will be selling the N82 in black. Black is making a big comeback in mobile phones. From the days when manufacturers moved towards silver, then a multitude of colours such as pink, purple, red or green, the big thing these days seems to be black. All of the recent announced Nokia handsets have been black, the N96, N78, 6210 Navigator and 6220 Classic. Most recent NSeries phones have also had a black version produced, the Nokia N73, N95 with its 8GB version, even going back to the N70, all came out in black.

The Black Nokia N82 is expected to be available to buy soon.

Sony Ericsson G900i 5.0 megapixel phone

February 21, 2008 at 9:01 am by Jay | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

Sony Ericsson G900iThe Sony Ericsson G900i is a new style smartphone from the Swedish manufacturer. The main focus of the handset is the 5.0 megapixel camera. This is the first smartphone from Sony Ericsson to include a 5.0 megapixel camera. The camera is equipped with autofocus, pretty much a necessity in any camera phone that has any desire to be taken seriously as a competitive imaging device to standalone digital cameras. There is also a flash facility, and an image stabiliser, to help out with those whose hand is not so steady.

The Sony Ericsson G900i is a smartphone, although not marketed as such, to appeal to a wider audience. The handset suns on the Symbian UIQ operating system, an open operating system that allows end users to add additional functionality with the addition of third party software. Mobiles.co.uk has a software shop where you can buy software for your UIQ phone.

The screen of the phone is a large 2.4 inch TFT touchscreen, supporting up to 256,000 colours. The Sony G900i is a 3G mobile phone, with additional support for WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0, including A2DP support. This allows you to listen to your favourite tunes from the phones music player, with a compatible wireless headset. No wires, no tangle, no mess.

The touchscreen of the phone has icons designed to be used with the finger, and it also comes supplied with a stylus, so you can use the handwriting recognition software to enter data into the phone.

Other features include the excellent Track ID application. Track ID simply works by recording a snippet of a song and uploading this to a website, which will recognise the song, tag it, and send you information on the song, artist, album, and where you can buy these from. All for free (bar a few bytes of data sending the track snippet over.) There is also X-Pict, which allows you to create slideshows on the phone, using pictures you have taken on the camera or stored into the media files from elsewhere. You can put together a show, including background music and transitions, all on the handset.

Music-wise the Ericsson G900i comes complete with an MP3 music player and an FM radio with RDS support. The radio can also be used in conjunction with the alarm clock to wake you up in the morning. No more waking up to the shrill cry of the standard alarm tone, now you can wake up to your favourite tunes on your favourite FM radio station.

The Sony Ericsson G900i is due for release shortly. If you are interested in this handset, sign up here and we will send you an email when the handset is available to order.

Sony Ericsson G700i Symbian mobile phone

February 20, 2008 at 9:32 am by Jay | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News

Sony Ericsson G700iAt the recent Mobile World Congress Sony Ericsson announced a range of new handsets, amongst which were the G700i.

The G700i is a new move for Sony, taking what is effectively a smartphone and packaging it to appeal to a wider audience. The Sony Ericsson G700i is a Symbian UIQ phone, and this is not the first time Sony have hidden a smartphone under another disguise, but previous incarnations (the W950i and W960i) were aimed at people who use their handset for music, as those handsets are marketed under the Walkman brand.

A main feature of the G700i is the touchscreen interface. Offering easy intuitive navigation, with the touchscreen simply touch the screen to navigate around the menu. If you prefer, a stylus is included with the handset, which works well especially with the handwriting recognition. The handwriting recognition offers a different way to enter data onto the phone, as opposed to the traditional phone keypad.

The G700i has an integrated 3.2 megapixel camera, offering direct interaction with the in-phone imaging and messaging features. A picture taken is more fun when it is shared, and with the G700i in your pocket sharing has never been easier. With an integrated email client you can email the pictures to any email address around the world, you can send photos straight to your blog, upload to an online photo sharing service, or more locally share them with friends via Bluetooth. As well as capturing high quality images, the Sony G700i is also equipped with video capture capability. Share videos by uploading to sites like YouTube.

The Ericsson G700i is also equipped with many other features. Included is a full web browser, support for RSS feeds and push email capability.

With the web browser on your phone you can view your favourite websites on the move. Keep up to date with the latest news headlines, check out your favourite social networking sites or look up the answers to the pub quiz on Google. Support for RSS feeds allows you to keep updated with the latest news from your favourite websites. Every time a new item is published, the RSS feed will update automatically. The push email allows you to receive email instantly on your phone, as soon as they arrive. A compatible email account is needed.

A neat feature on the G700i is the radio alarm clock. I find most alarm tones on a mobile phone to be very irritating first thing in the morning, and I usually look for something soft and gentle to replace the default codes with. With the G700i you can set the alarm to the radio station of your choice and be woken up to the latest hits every morning. What could be better? This is a great feature from Sony Ericsson.

The Sony Ericsson G700i is expected to market soon. If you want to be notified when the handset is available to buy you can sign up here.

Nokia MD4 Speakers Review

February 16, 2008 at 2:31 pm by Jay | In Mobile Phone Accessories

The other day we had some Nokia MD4 Speakers in the office, so I thought I would take the opportunity to put them to the test, just to see how good they are. Here’s what I found:

Free Nokia MD4 Speakers

The Nokia MD4 speakers produce great sound, given the size of the speakers. Small and compact, these foldable speakers are thin, slim, and very pocketable.

The MD4 look good and sound great. The MD4 speakers have a V-shaped design, and can stand in that position, or lay flat. They are compatible with virtually every Nokia phone that has either a pop port connector, 2.5mm or 3.5mm connector. The speakers themselves come with a 3.5mm jack, plus a pop port connector (the AD-15, as supplied with the Nokia N73) and a 2.5mm to 3.5mm convertor, for use with phones such as the Nokia 6300.

Not only do the speakers work with Nokia handsets, but will play music from any device that has a compatible connector. This means iPod. You can connect the speakers to your iPod and straight away you can play your music loud and share with your friends.

Not only iPod though. All Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, for example, are supplied with a headset that allows you to use your own favourite headphones. Using the same connector/adaptor you can connect the Nokia MD4 speakers to your phone for instant mobile stereo.

The MD4 speakers are equipped with a built in stereo amplifier for improved sound quality and also has an internal radio antenna, so you can use the speakers with a compatible handset that has a built in FM radio. The speakers run on 4 x AAA batteries, which give up to 30 hours of music playback.

Testing the speakers in the office we found the sound quality to be very good all round. We played a variety of music, from Opera, Classic and pop to some loud rock, and the sound quality was equally good across all genres.

Overall I found the MD4 speakers to be an excellent piece of kit, very useful, and portable into the bargain. I was that impressed, I promptly went and purchased a set of speakers for use with my N95 8GB and my iPod Classic.

Even better for anyone reading this is that you can get these Nokia Speakers for Free with most Nokia mobile phones from Mobiles.co.uk.

Network operators 3 and O2 join forces to create ‘EyeVibe’

February 14, 2008 at 5:56 pm by Daniella | In Mobile News

eyevibegif.png

3 and O2 have announced that they will be merging their current mobile video clip sites into one which will be renamed EyeVibe. This will be the first cross-network social networking service in the UK. It is a service which anyone with a video-enabled mobile phone can access. For other network users don’t worry there has been a rumour that 3 and O2’s competitors - Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange will also be joining the EyeVibe service later this month.

Yospace is the company that have made 3’s ‘SeeMeTV’ and O2’s ‘LookAtMe’ current video clip services, and they have created the new EyeVibe which has been in development for the past six months. Yospace have said that their plan for 2008 is:

“to make EyeVibe the biggest and brightest mobile community in the UK.”

With more and more 5 megapixel camera phones coming on to the market, such as the new Samsung G600, the future for mobile video looks to be very exciting.

This new mobile phone video community will allow users to watch video clips, and upload their own mobile video clips to be watched by others. It lets those who have added a video to make cash, as when a video is downloaded the maker of that video will get a small fee which is paid through a PayPal account.

So far both 3’s and O2’s current video clip service has had a combined total of 60,000 video clips added, that have been downloaded more than 32 million times. This has earned a total of over £800,000 for the creators of the video clips. Members of the EyeVibe community will be able to interact with one another by commenting and voting for each video clip and they can also message each other.

Video clips can be submitted via MMS to 60300. Browsing the actual EyeVibe site is free, and it costs only 10p to download a clip for 3 and O2 customers, other UK network operators will vary.
