Air France will be the first airline to trial the technology. In the UK, BMI have said they will test on-board mobile phone and data usage, before deciding on whether it will roll the technology out across its fleet. Ryanair is planning a full fleet deployment later this year and will install the OnAir technology on its Boeing 737 aircraft. As with the W950i the Sony Ericsson W960i runs on the Symbian UIQ platform. The user can operate the phone via the keypad, a scroll wheel situated on the side of the phone or using the handsets touch screen. There is an RSS reader, FM radio and built in email client. Being a Symbian phone it is possible to enhance the functionality of the handset by the addition of a range of third party software. The walkman player on the W960i is the latest version 2.0 player with support for album art. With the new Media Manager replacing Disc2Go, transferring music to the handset is as easy as drag n drop. The W960i has the Sony Ericsson Track ID feature. This lets you record a snippet of unknown music to the phone and upload it to the Sony Ericsson website. The music will be ID tagged and sent back to your phone with title, artist and album information. The W960i is a Tri band GSM and 3G handset. Another innovation for the Sony Ericsson W910 is the auto detect in video playback mode. Whilst playing a video, turn the phone horizontally and the video plays back in widescreen mode. The screen of the handset is 240×320 QVGA TFT with support for up to 262,000 colours. The phone has 40MB of internal memory with support for the proprietary Sony Memory Stick Micro, which currently offers cards up to 2GB in capacity. The handset itself weighs in at a very light 86g, and measures just 12.5mm thick. The European Aviation Safety Authority has given clearance for the use of mobile phones in airplanes, meaning airline passengers in Europe will be able to use handsets during flights for the first time.
