Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious wins $25,000

April 23, 2007 at 5:32 pm by Ben | In Just For Fun, Mobile News

SupercalifragilisticexpialadociousIn the news today: 13 year old Morgan Pozgar won $25,000 for typing the word supercalifragilisticexpialadocious in just 15 seconds, as part of LG’s National Texter Championship. In the photo she seems to be using some sort of HTC MDA device, with a slide-out keypad, but we think it must have been done on a traditional mobile phone keypad.

This reminded me of something my colleague Jay said the other day, that his N95 ‘Multimedia Computer’ didn’t need a full keyboard like my P990i because he could use the numeric pad just as quickly.

So…

Typing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious with T9 predictive text turned off…

13 year old girl Unknown phone 15.0 secs
Jay Nokia N95 17.3 secs
Louis Nokia 6300 24.5 secs
Ben Sony Ericsson P990i 8.3 secs

Motorola Z8 MOTORIZR smartphone coming soon

April 19, 2007 at 3:33 pm by Jay | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile Phones

Motorola Z8The Motorola Z8 MOTORIZR is a ‘kick’ slider phone and runs the Symbian UIQ 9.1 operating system. The Z8 has an impressive feature list, including a 2.0 megapixel camera, a 2.2 inch QVGA screen supporting up to 16 million colours, and support for HSDPA, the mobile broadband service that offers download speeds of up to 3.6mbps

The design of the Z8 is unique among current handsets, when the slide is fully extended the Z8 curves to fit the contours of your face. Inevitably comparisons are drawn to the Nokia ‘banana’ phone of years gone by. I’m sure if the Z8 gains as iconic a status as that enjoyed by the original Nokia, Motorola won’t mind one bit.

MotoRIZR Z8Motorola are very keen to promote the media capabilities of their new phone. Video playback is at 30 fps offering a very smooth and enjoyable viewing experience. The Z8 will support additional memory in the form of Micro SD cards, and will handle cards up to 4GB in capacity. Motorola say consumers should expect to be able to store up to 10 movies for future viewing. The handset itself ships with a 512MB card that will have a movie pre installed so consumers can enjoy the viewing experience straight away.

In addition to the video playback options, Motorola have also enhanced the media capabilities on the handset by including the Sky By Mobile service on the phone. This allows SKY subscribers to log into their account from the phone, view the full SKY program guide, access news and sports stories, and you can even set your SKY+ box to record programs whilst you are out and about. And if that is not enough, you can stream SKY channels to the handset over 3G.

The Z8 is expected to launch late April early May

Review of the Samsung u600 mobile phone

April 17, 2007 at 2:06 pm by Dirk | In Mobile Phones

Samsung U600‘10.9 millimetres matter’ is what Samsung want to tell you about the Samsung U600, one of the latest releases from their Ultra Range of handsets. In this case they are certainly right!

This newest offering from Samsung manages to pack an incredible 3.2 Mega Pixel Camera, 262,000 TFT colour screen, touch sensitive buttons, Quad band, Bluetooth, MP3 player, FM radio and an expandable memory slot into a tiny mobile phone.

With its stylish ‘Sapphire Blue’ colour and sleek looks, you can tell just by looking that this phone is something special. The handset feels comfortable in your hand and the slide action is satisfyingly smooth, as you would expect from a Samsung mobile phone. The touch sensitive buttons are adequately sensitive, without being overly so and thereby reduce the annoyance of accidental button presses. The usual Samsung menu system makes for easy navigation of all the features.

The built-in digital camera takes pictures and video of astonishing quality. It’s amazing how much Samsung have managed to fit into such a small mobile phone. Whilst its dimensions are tiny (103.5 x 49.3 x 10.9 mm) it by no means feels flimsy or fragile as the handset is weighted well and is comfortable for single handed use even when the slide is open.

All in all Samsung have packed a quality camera and MP3 Player into a stylishly neat and tidy slider that will fit in even the tightest pocket or smallest handbag.

In summary the impressive features of this phone seem doubly so due to its slim size.

Prada Phone by LG

April 2, 2007 at 8:29 pm by Ben | In Mobile News

LG PradaLG have just released their long-awaited “Prada” branded handset, officially called the “Prada phone by LG“, a stylish touchscreen device that some are comparing to Apple’s upcoming ‘iPhone‘.

Prada, S.p.A. is an Italian fashion label, known as “Prada Brothers” when it was founded in Mario Prada in 1913. After many years of specializing in leather goods, in 1989 they launched their first ‘couture’ range and took the world by storm. Today they are one of the top five luxury goods companies in the world, alongside famous names like Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

Everyone these days has a mobile phone, so it seems logical that these luxury goods labels will try to extend into the marketplace. Nokia went one way with their Vertu range, exclusive handsets designed within a subsidiary and including features like a concierge service and gemstone settings. Dolce & Gabbana teamed up with Motorola in 2006 with the fabulous gold-coloured D&G V3i RAZR, and now rising stars LG have joined up with Prada to offer their vision of “something special”.

The revolutionary aspect of the LG Prada is its form factor - it’s a touchscreen device. Like the iPhone there are only 3 buttons, the standard ‘red’ and ‘green’ call handling buttons and a navigation button. Almost all the phone’s features are controlled using your fingers on the massive touchscreen, including text and number entry.

Combined with the amazingly small dimensions (at just 12mm thick it’s actually thinner than a Motorola RAZR) and what has been described as the most usable touchscreen interface ever, we’re sure this is going to be a very in-demand handset for those who have to have the best (and maybe those who can’t wait 12 months for an iPhone..)
