New penalties for using a mobile whilst driving

February 27, 2007 at 12:41 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

mobile_penalties.jpgThe new, stricter penalties for using a mobile phone whilst driving come into effect from today.

The fixed penalty fine increases from £30 to £60, and 3 points will be added to the offenders license. If the case is taken to court, motorists run the risk of a fine of up to £1,000 and even disqualification from driving.

The police are advising motorists to take the new law seriously.

Meredydd Hughes, the chief constable of South Yorkshire police and the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) roads policing spokesman, said:

“It’s important to remember that 77,000 people have already been fined for driving whilst using their mobile phones, a figure that highlights this offence is policed robustly.

“Driving whilst using a mobile phone is not acceptable and these penalties will hopefully deter those who think they are above the law.”

There’s no excuse. If you drive, don’t use your mobile phone unless you are using a Bluetooth headset, or fully fitted car kit. And even then, only use the phone when you have to.

The slimmest 3GSM conference

February 16, 2007 at 11:13 am by Jay | In 3GSM, Coming Soon Handsets

Slim is in. Content may be king, but slim is the buzz word from the 3GSM conference this year.

We had Nokia with the N93i, a slimmer version of the poular N93:

n93-wince.JPG

We had the slimmest NSeries phone to date, the N76:

n76-wince.JPG

and the slim business phone, the Nokia E65:

e65-wince.JPG

Sony Ericsson, not to miss out, launched the slimmest Walkman branded phone, the W880:

w880-wince.JPG

And then there was Samsung, taking slim to an all time record with the amazing Ultra Edition II range.

The U300 is just 12.1mm:

u300.JPG

The U600 is just 10.9mm:

u600.JPG

and the U100 beats them all at just 5.9mm!

u100.JPG

Not only is the U100 the slimmest phone ever, it packs in an impressive range of features for a phone of its dimensions. The screen is a very clear TFT screen sporting 256k colours. Built in to the slender handset is a 3 megapixel camera. There is also an MP3 player, support for TV out and an email client. The U100 has 70MB of internal memory.

The ultimate phone?

February 15, 2007 at 4:41 pm by Jay | In 3GSM, Coming Soon Handsets

n95-widescreen.JPGThe Nokia N95 promises to be a top selling phone. We’ve known about the handset for a while now, and it is due for release in March. Already we’ve seen that T-Mobile intend to take have the handset in their range. So, does the N95 deserve the title, the ultimate phone? Well, according to it’s feature set, I’d suggest it does. The N95 boasts a very large screen, QVGA with 16 million colours, and is in slide format, similar to the N80. Surprisingly, the N95 is lighter than the N80. The N95 has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, with Carl Zeiss lens. The phone can be used in normal mode, or widescreen, as shown in the picture. When opened this way four keys are exposed for control of music, videos, etc. The N95 is capable of recording video at 30fps.As well as the camera, the phone has built in GPS support, which can be used with the Nokia maps application. The N95 supports 3G and Mobile Broadband (HSDPA), and is also GSM quad band with GPRS & EDGE support. There is also built in WiFi support, and universal plug n play compatibility. There is a TV out option, allowing you to view videos and pictures stored on the phone directly on your TV.

The N95 has a built in music player, which supports MP3 and WMA files. There is stereo speaker support, and a built in FM radio. The handset has 160MB internal memory, which can be expanded by a further 2GB with the addition of a micro SD card. With Bluetooth stereo support you can listen to the music player wirefree with a compatible Bluetooth stereo headset.

n95-side-on.JPGDespite the impressive feature list, the N95 is by no means a large phone. There are phones available with a lower feature set that come in with bigger dimensions (P990i, for example). The N95 has dimensions of just 99×53x21mm and weighs in at a respectable 120g.

Being a Symbian handset, the N95 features can be enhanced with the addition of extra software (such as software for advanced call management, translation software, etc) Currently there are over 1,000 software titles available for S60v3 phones, and this library will continue to grow as Nokia release more handsets over the coming months.

As well as everything listed above, the N95 also has support for java 2.0, as well as the basics such as text and multimedia messaging.

Connection wise the handset has a USB port for connecting to a PC, and a 3.5mm jack point allowing you to plug in your own headset for music listening, and video viewing.

Overall, the Nokia N95 packs it in. There’s probably a few features I have forgotten to mention. Does the N95 deserve the title of ultimate phone? I think so. You’d be hard pushed to find a better featured handset anytime soon.

LG Shine Series - More to Come!

February 14, 2007 at 3:14 pm by Ben | In Mobile News

new-shine-wince.JPGWe’ve had the LG Shine series KV4200 slider for a while now, but on the LG stand there was also a candybar, a flip and a bluetooth headset. The candybar Shine handset was a little underwhelming (but felt very well constructed and solid), but we loved the flip (pictured) almost more than the slider.

Details of a close encounter with the “Prada” phone to follow - let’s just say it’s LG’s best handset yet, and one of the nicest touchscreen phones I’ve used too..

Nokia S60 Party

February 14, 2007 at 11:53 am by Ben | In Mobile News

Nokia S60 PartySo here we are at the world’s biggest congress of wireless solutions providers, and do you think we can get a reliable internet connection? Nope. Busy networks and an apparent lack of usable WiFi means posting is not as heavy as we expected, but we’re here now!

Last night we scored invites to the Nokia S60 party, held at the fantastic Palais de Musica Catalunya (thanks Phil!). I’ve never been in a room with so many Finns, and it was a fantastic night. Lots of gossip, lots of personalities and above all lots of hints. For instance, sounds like Nokia are going to be using “Web” as a runtime.. Which means we can expect “webapps” on future Nokias, and lots of room for 3rd party software..

Nokia Get a Business Phone Right?

February 13, 2007 at 12:08 pm by Ben | In 3GSM, Coming Soon Handsets

nokia-e65-3gsm-wince.jpg

Just back from having a quick play with the new Nokia E65 - like the Nokia N80 this is a slider, but unlike the N80 it a) is slim and b) promises a good battery life. Features include the ubiquitous WiFi, 3G, and EDGE but even with the latest feature pack for S60 3rd Edition there’s no provision for stereo bluetooth or HSDPA. However, given the expected userbase, I think we can forgive this. The handset feels well built, with a solid slider action and good key response. Stay tuned for more! Off to play with the E90, as a P990 user myself Nokia have to convince me!

My colleague is out there now snapping away and getting the latest gossip, so watch this space..

Data connectivity is supported by the inclusion of GPRS and EDGE, with added Bluetooth support.

Nokia supply free downloadable maps

February 8, 2007 at 1:56 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

s2g_beta_logo.gifNokia have announced that it is making the smart2go mapping and navigation platform available for free download. Nokia plans to start offering the smart2go application for free, on Saturday, February 10th, for selected Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices initially and has plans to roll out support for most of the major mobile OS platforms including Nokia S60, Series 40, PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices.

Nokia will pre-install the smart2go mapping and navigation application on all future Nokia Nseries multimedia computers under the name “Nokia Maps”. Current owners of Nokia devices may also download Nokia Maps to their supported devices.

The platform contains over 15 million POIs that help people explore the most interesting sights, restaurants or accommodations around them. Customers can select their favorite locations and send them to friends by multimedia message, Bluetooth wireless technology, infrared or e-mail. They can also send map excerpts and routes or save map screen shots to the gallery on the device.

“People will trust and use maps if they have those maps with them when they need them, and smart2go allows consumers the full freedom of which maps they want to carry with them. By offering Nokia Maps and smart2go for free on your mobile device, cost is no longer a barrier for anyone to enjoy the convenience of maps and routing on-the-go,” said Ralph Eric Kunz, vice-president, Nokia, Multimedia. “Nokia is on track to build the world’s most connected location based platform for mobile devices which also opens up interesting opportunities for future services.”
