Sony Ericsson has become the first leading consumer brand to publish content in the Mobizine format. Entitled Soundtrack to your life, Mobizines allow mobile phone users to receive ’snack-sized’ versions of their favourite content in a rich, colourful format and clearly branded style. Already there are 17 titles live today including traditional publishing brands such as Conde Nast, BBC and Time Out and this portfolio is steadily growing.

Soundtrack to Your Life is effectively a handset-based magazine that will give music fans on all mobile networks access to entertaining, informative and regularly updated music editorial content such as news, reviews, gossip and interviews. The Mobizine costs just a few pence, each edition is cheap, quick to download and can be read without a network connection; On the bus or tube, for example.

Mobizines are typically made up of 4 sections and each of these sections contains 5 stories. For example, the Soundtrack to Your Life sections are Latest, Gig Previews, Club Previews and This Week’s Top Ten. At the bottom of each story a user will find links to other stories, downloadable content or other relevant merchandising. All items will be accompanied by an image.

To download Mobizines to the handset, the consumer texts ‘Mobi’ followed by the name of the Mobizine (e.g. mobi styl 1) to 63333 and follows the instructions to download. The consumer can read each Mobizine as often as s/he likes at no extra cost and only pays once per edition. This edition automatically gets updated when the next edition is published.

Both the pearl pink and gloss black versions have digital textures on the back, which personalise the device.

“The overall design makes a strong statement for the Nokia N72 as a multimedia computer, but the digital textures, or graphics, on the back add a subtlety of personal ownership, that it is my device,” Said Bill Sermon, vice president of Multimedia Design, Nokia.

N73

You can connect the Nokia N93 directly to your TV for a widescreen movie experience or upload your images and video to online albums or blogs. Moreover, you can create high-quality home movies and burn them to DVD with the included Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 software.

Featuring MPEG-4 VGA video capture at 30 frames per second, the Nokia N93 delivers an unparalleled video experience with stereo audio recording and digital stabilization, enabling smooth and shake-free movies. The Nokia N93 incorporates a 3.2 megapixel (2048 x 1536 pixels) camera with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, 3x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom, as well as autofocus and close-up mode for amazing clarity and accuracy. Furthermore, the Nokia N93 has an active camera toolbar which displays all available capture features, from exposure value to color tones and white balance. There are dedicated keys for shutter, zoom and flash and also a camera mode key that enables you to switch quickly and easily between image and video capture.

All of the above handsets are based on S60 3rd Edition software on Symbian OS and are expected to be on the market from June/July 2006.

Shocking silent alert system

April 21, 2006 at 2:29 pm by Jay | In Mobile News

Motorola-hei2a (WinCE).gif

Motorola are working on a new silent alert system for mobile phones, that is completely silent. The system works by giving the user a mild electric shock, similar to that given by massage and weight loss systems currently on the market.

Using a small pad containing electrodes that are wirelessly connected to the handset, a small shock is sent stimulating the skin of the user.

Motorola claim the device is to address the problem that a vibrating alert is not entirely silent, as when left on hard surfaces for example. Vibrating alerts also have the problem of not being strong enough to alert the user, but using a larger motor doesn’t help the noise problem.

Power levels for the new shock system can be set to personal levels, allowing the user to change intensity to help identify different incoming callers.

At an estimated cost of $75,000 the SLVR Diamond does not come cheap. But under all the jewellery it’s still a standard Motorola phone. The handset was recently showcased at the Fresh Art “Zoom” in Russia.

8800 Gold

April 7, 2006 at 3:42 pm by Jay | In Mobile Phones

The Nokia 8800 has started to lose a bit of its appeal. Sure, it still looks nice, but the battery performance is poor, and the range of features is not as good as it could be.

A jeweller in London has decided to give the 8800 a more exclusive appeal and has coated his model with a 24 carat gold plate sheaf.

Laban Roomes has been known in the past to gold plate car emblems, jewellery, even golf clubs. With a cost of around £800 the gold plated 8800 is another way to join that exclusive club: ‘People who have more money than sense’

On2Go

April 7, 2006 at 2:34 pm by Jay | In Mobile content/services

on2go.GIF

A new service launched by the Guardian, allowing instant access to the latest news headlines on virtually any mobile phone - free of charge.

Once the application has been opened, it will automatically update with the latest news and sports headlines on subjects you choose when you subscribe to the service.

There is no charge for the application or from the Guardian group to access the content. All you pay for is the data that is transferred across the phone network. Typically this is very low cost. The application itself is only 40kb, keeping the connection open uses 1kb an hour. Receiving a headline is 0.1kb and receiving a news story is 2.5 - 7kb. The average cost per MB on most data plans is £1 but be sure to check with your operator if you are unsure.

On2go will not work on Three or O2 Prepay phones.

Free text messaging.

April 6, 2006 at 11:36 am by Jay | In Mobile content/services

Tex2logo.gif

Well almost. But don’t let the almost put you off.

A new service has launched, called Tex2. A very simple little application needs to be downloaded to your handset, and needs to be on the handset of the person you are texting to. Using this application, all messages are routed via the internet rather than network messaging centres. The only cost to the sender is the cost of a data connection to send the message. Now, whilst this will depend to a large extent on the data plan on the users account, the data size of a text message is minimal. An average size (160 character) text message is going to cost around half a penny. On average, 1,000 text messages will cost about £5.

As the system uses an internet connection there is a cost to both the sender and the recipient. The Tex2 application can be downloaded from the Tex2 website, http://www.tex2me.com/index.html Just enter your mobile number and you will receive a text message with a link to where you can download the application from. Once you have the application on your phone the first time you use it you will need to choose a user name. And that’s about it, very easy and straight forward.

The Tex2 service will not work on Three or O2 PAYG due to service restrictions by these networks.

London’s Science Museum opened the Dead Ringers exhibition on Wednesday, 29 March, in the science and technology news gallery of the institution.

It showcased pioneering phone technology, including the first UK display of NEC’s phone with a biodegradable cover, currently only available in Japan.

A prototype phone cover with an implanted sunflower seed, which gets additional nutrients from the biodegrading cover, is also on display.
